408816 2005-11-30 08:55:00 A 100 piece spindle of 8x DVD discs is $49.99 plus gst, which comes in at $49.99c per disc.

Yes, well, at $4900 per spindle ($49.99 per disc) I can see why you are objecting Metla.:p

I'll go for the 50 cent version. If 15 cents extra per disc is going to break anybody they can't afford to run a computer anyway.

Jokes aside, in actual fact, on Metla's figures the cost is 7 cents per 100MB for a CD, and 1.06 cents per 100MB for a single layer DVD. I know which cost factor I prefer.

Cheers

408817 2005-11-30 08:58:00 I personally agree with Billy T.

This is the first disc in about 9 months ive actually thrown in my drive.. All the old CD-R's are simply given to the little sibblings to write on with permanant marker then hang on their walls.

I buy PCWorld for the Magazine and its content, not the CD.

Speaking of availability... I have in my house:
A Standalone DVD Player (Rarely used)
An Xbox with a DVD Reader
PC #1 with a DVD/CD-RW Drive
PC #2 with a DVD-Rom
Laptop #3 with an internal DVD-Rom and an external DVD+/-RW Drive
PC #4 with a DVD+/-RW Drive

I havent had a drive that can only read CDs in my house in almost a good 6 months. Now PCWorld have been able to cram enough goodies onto the disc to make it worth my while.
I think its Poll time :-)

408818 2005-11-30 09:03:00 Hear Hear Tux!

Get with the times people -- so much more can be fitted onto a DVD and if you ain't got one in your PC than you're positively prehistoric -- DVD penetration is as wideapread as Bruce states.
EVERY single major reputable C mag in Australia (PC User/APC/PC Authority) has moved to the cover DVD concept.

408819 2005-11-30 09:12:00 *Cough*

Pardon my ignorance, but I assume that a DVD ROM will also read a standard CD?

What about burning CDs, can they do that too or do you need to keep a separate CD-RW to make your audio CDs?

Cheers

408820 2005-11-30 09:19:00 yep, DVD-Writer does them all. Metla (12)
408821 2005-11-30 09:23:00 Since I posted this I would like to have my say. I bought a new cd writer 8 months ago because the old one failed. I am reluctant to dump this because pc world has changed their viewpoint. I buy the mag. equally for the content and the cd. Sometimes good othertimes not so good, but I realise they are catering for a broad spectrum. Also I am on dialup so I will not be d/l videos. What about a poll? gradebdan (2186)
408822 2005-11-30 09:45:00 Poll about what??

Getting a DVD / DVD writer, doesnt mean you have to dl videos to use it .

You can use it for burning videos etc, u make . And burning cd's / music cds etc .

408824 2005-11-30 10:08:00 I would be happy for them to ditch the disc alltogeather, replace each month with 5 of those CD covers they use. Thats the only part that has any use to me. Rob99 (151)
408825 2005-11-30 10:22:00 Soon, PCWorld magazine will also start to introduce blu-ray disc, HD-DVD etc.

Cheers :)
