408987 2005-11-30 19:41:00 I recently bought an Asus 1608P2 from XP Computers for a shade over $80. I was a little hesitant about the Asus, as I had an Asus DVD-ROM that was giving up the ghost after three years, and not reading discs properly. But the reviews of the 1608P seemed to be pretty solid, so went with that and it's been fine.

Out of interest, what is a good "real-world" time for writing a full DVD+R disc?

Cheers

408988 2005-11-30 19:47:00 about 4 minutes - I've done it with a Liteon and a Pioneer Mike_SA (8956)
408989 2005-11-30 20:14:00 As for format, they are all multi-format nowadays, the only exception is that some also do DVD-RAM, which is worth going for if you have or intend to get a TV-DVD-Recorder that uses that format.
Bang on Metla, you were reading my mind. DVD RAM capability is one of my priorities. As I understand it, they don't make DL DVD RAM, but I assume that I can get DL DVD capability plus DVD RAM in the one package?

Actually, at the low cost of DVD RW these days, I might consider hedging my bets and installing two if I can't combine the facilities I want in one unit. That would make life easier, and if they were different brands it would overcome any minor media compatability or readability issues.

I'm starting to like the idea more and more! I am planning on building/having built a new business machine next year (might even get the big guy in Wanganui to quote me for the job) and it will have to last me the next five years so I'll want it to be good to start with.

Cheers

408990 2005-11-30 20:32:00 Here's one (www.edencomputers.co.nz) that's DL and supports DVD-ram.

Down the road, the blanks (www.edencomputers.co.nz) are $29.30

But what's with the plastic sheath and the 9.4 GB.

Is it dual-layer or double-sided, and if DS how the heck do you label it? I saw some DVD RAM discs that looked like that the other day while browsing for something else and got the impression they were cartridge versions for special players.

408992 2005-12-01 03:44:00 I think theyre double sided, which is why they're 9.4 GB (4.7 on either side).

As shown here (en.wikipedia.org)

I spose it depends on whether the burner itself supports DVD-ram 1 or 2.

I would say 2. I think the dvd can come out of the cartridge. The cartridge is only for storage.

That's an old link Speedy, and the product number doesn't even appear in PriceSpy any more. The only other RAM enabled drive I can find is the LG GSA-4120 at $230. :(

I am surprised that there is only one model available that can read and write DVD RAM. There may be others of course, but I don't see them on PriceSpy at present.

408994 2005-12-01 06:43:00 Well thats the only link on the site at the mo. For this burner.

I'll have to see if they still sell those burners.

I dont think many people would buy them, since not many cd players can play DVD-ram.

Unless you play whatever dvd, on the dvd burner itself, or its a recent model of a stereo system. Like the one here.

It looks like Pioneer, and Samsung make DVD-Ram burners, but they only read DVD-Ram, they don't write to them.

408995 2005-12-01 06:59:00 Hi Billy

I have a LG GSA 4160B DVD writer, it supports +-RW and RAM and haven't had any issues with it to date and burn with a variety of cheaper disks.

I've just had a view thru pricespy and the following LG drives are multiformat and available LG GSA 4163B cheapest $79.88 incl, LG GSA 4160B $102, LG GSA 4165B $86.51, LG GSA 4167 $75.94, so take your pick.

408996 2005-12-01 07:08:00 Hello Billy,

I think you will find, all models of LG DVD Writers support DVD RAM Writing.

It also happens that LG writers are one of the better brands on the market, combined with having a very good retail price (Ascent retail them for $98.00 inc GST) www.ascent.co.nz

You could save a couple of more dollars by shopping around.
