I am wondering whether is is worth it to try and overclock my Asus portable desktop. It is a portable desktop-it is a laptop built to hold desktop componentry. (Sorry for the poor explanation but it's hard). It has a Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHZ processor. Other specs:
-512 MB RAM
-40GB HD space
-15'' LCD monitor
-Si Integrated Graphics Card 64MB
-Avance AC 97 64MB Sound Card
What are your thoughts?

As it is, it probably underclocks automatically to save heating up. Overclocking (if even possible) would be a very risky business, as the ability for a laptop to shed the extra heat is severely limited and would probably be somewhat problematic from a reliability aspect.

408571 2005-11-29 09:55:00 i doubt the laptop bios even have overclocking features Prescott (11)
408572 2005-11-29 09:58:00 Its about the sillist idea going, If you want extra performance then tune up the OS, Add some ram,Remove all the crap that underclocks em, and perhaps look at a faster HD.

If you OC your laptop and damage it, then its ruined pretty much, You cant just swap out parts like you can on a PC.

Having said that, I overclocked the hell out of my laptops Video Chipset after reading at Toms hardware that they used the exact same chipset in a whole range of laptops and the only difference between models was the clockspeed....I proved this quite wrong, from the amount of artifacts that immediatly covered the screen it was obvious my video ram couldn't handle the extra speed.....

I won't be doing that again.

my thoughts are
"it's a dumb idea" for all the obvious reasons

408574 2005-11-29 17:28:00 The obvious question.

Why would anyone use a lap top as a desk top?

408575 2005-11-29 19:12:00 Overclock what? The CPU maybe, although as above - I wouldn't. The graphics is pointless. Just upgrade if you need more grunt. pctek (84)
408576 2005-11-30 02:25:00 I was just talking about my CPU. And yeah I knew it's a stupid idea, just wanted to hear your thoughts. But apparently this was a stupid question and sorry guys, I think I'll stick to what I have. Also I'm not going to bother with upgrades of the components, I can't valify it. Albert (482)
