| 409405 | 2005-12-02 06:57:00 | Well, my Nokia Ni500 seems to have died on me again (on line via Freenet dial-up at present) . A week or so ago I posted about failure to connect and found Xtra's help line very good indeed . My connection was visible on their screen, it was logging on properly, picking up an IP address and sending data packets but it wouldn't communicate with anything other than the authentication doo-dads for Xtra . It wouldn't open in a browser window either (provided the gateway IP of 192 . 168 . 7 . 1 is the one I should use, but http://192 . 168 . 7 . 0 didn't work either) . That problem spontaneously cleared itself that evening and it has been fine ever since, until this morning that is, when it reverted to its old habits . Knowing the form, I ran a Telnet session that confirmed that all was OK and the IP address changed if I left it off for a while then rebooted, so I guess it has an obscure defect and it is now history . I went out and bought a D-Link 504G router to replace it, but I have read the Quick Installation Guide which left a lot of questions unanswered, and I have also read the 71 page PDF manual which has about 16 or 17 pages that are directly applicable . From all that I find that the set up is very manual and "hands-on" compared to the Nokia, which was just insert the CD, run it, then go on-line . I didn't want to muck around half the weekend so I had a look on Xtra's site for their installation guidelines that I thought I saw some time ago for all the main ADSL Modem/Router set-ups but they seem to be missing in action . It is all too slow on dial-up . :( Does anybody know where to find more practical and to the point set up information for the D-Link adsl modem series? Cheers Billy 8-{) |

Settings are the same for any ISP apart from username and password. www.ihug.co.nz D-link support 0800 900 900 will also help you set it up. |

| 409408 | 2005-12-02 08:06:00 | You wouldn't read about it!! :groan: About 30 minutes after posting I went back to the Nokia and it was working normally again . The overall length of outage was much the same as last time, about 8-10 hours . I had checked the Xtra network info several times during the day and there were only the usual "no known problems on the network" messages . Then I did a little Googling in NZ and I found this on www . there . co . nz/blog/news . asp for 18 November, which pretty much coincides with my first outage . On Thursday, the net went down completely . I rang our ISP, and after seething a little at the newbie questions ("have you tried restarting your router?"), I was asked - "Do you happen to have a Nokia Ni500 router?" . Indeedy, I do - it being my networking pride and joy - combined with my 8-port switch it forms the main backbone of our flat's network and internet gateway . "Well you won't be using that anymore" was the effective response . Jaw-dropped(?), I listened, as it was explained to me that Telecom have "upgraded" their ADSL network over the week, specifically to Alcatel DSLAMs, which has a side effect of rendering all Nokia Ni500s in New Zealand effectively useless, as they are no longer capable of communication over such a network . I don't know if there is any truth in it, but I intend to try and find out . Are there any other Nokia Ni500 users on PF1 who have had similar outages? Cheers Billy 8-{) |

Cheers Billy 8-{) I experienced quite similar outages with my good old Ni500 a couple of months ago and have replaced it with a Dynalink RTA770. It is so far so good. |
