| 409451 | 2005-12-03 00:44:00 | Why do you need to update a firewall? Virus checkers, spyware scanners have definition updates - explain what the firewall has that needs updating. Same reason any app including windows, needs updating Protection against new and emerging threats, bug fixes, program improvements etc Many firewalls provide email scanning and need updated to cope with new threats Most firewalls don't have definition updates as such, they usually release a whole new build Do you think a firewall designed 5yrs ago would cope in todays environment? |

This site may shed some light- http://vmyths.com/ At a quick glance I can't see anything related to an old firewall coping in todays environment Can you point me to the article/link you are referring to as I don't really want to wade through everything on the site Thanks I also don't think older firewalls would have much in the way of wireless support & protection which is very commonplace nowadays |

Firewalls don't need updating. |

Thanks, but I don't need a lesson on how a firewall works, I'm pretty much up with the ins and outs of software & hardware firewalls it's part of what I do for a living. It's probably me, but I still cant find the section on why firewalls don't need updated, I must be having a blonde day. It very much depends on the environment and the type of network you're trying to protect as to which firewall suits best If ZA 4.0 does it for you then well & good. I'll let the Network Admin know he shouldn't have upgraded ours as it wasn't necessary. |
