2005-12-02 19:38:00 | Hi, Wonder if anyone can help me, I am running 2 pc's with NIS2005 & windows xp home, I am trying to network them using a crossover cable. I have got the internet running through ok but they cannot see each other or any related resources, I have gone through the network wizard but to be quite honest it is useless, is there a way manually that I can configure it all to work as I desire. any assistance would be greatly received

And enter the ips in manually . Give each one a separate ip address . The workgroup has to be the same on ALL computers . You're right the wizard is useless . ie: For the first / main computer: ip address: 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 subnet mask 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 connected pc's (2nd PC) Do the same except Under IP address put 192 . 168 . 0 . 2 subnet 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 Default gateway: 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (this will get it on the net) . And where it says use the following DNS server addresses Enter your ISP DNS servers, if you know what they are . If you have a 3rd computer . do the same as above Except the ip address will be 192 . 168 . 0 . 3 etc And in NIS 2005, if it has the option, open it, then go to Personal firewall, home networking, and run the wizard, so both pc's can see each other . Or else they'll block each other . |

2005-12-02 20:04:00 | Yup, u enter the ip address in manually on both, just dont give them the same ip address . And give them the same workgroup name . And to share a folder, click on a folder and share it . Just dont share the whole hard drive .

2005-12-02 20:24:00 | What version of windows are u using Homer? The info I gave, is for XP. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2005-12-02 20:27:00 | XP home and same with the other computer | homer (363) | |
2005-12-02 20:37:00 | Open My network places / view network connections, if this icon is on the desktop . If it isnt on the desktop, right mouse on the desktop / properties / desktop / customise desktop . Tick My network places . Then OK . Then highlight the LAN connection icon / right mouse / properties / internet procotol (TCP/IP) . This is where u enter the ip address and the subnet mask in . Change it to use the following ip address first . If you have firewire onboard, (1394 connection), DON'T touch this icon in View network connection . It'll stuff it up .
