409458 2005-12-02 12:24:00 Hi,
I just recently got a Nvidia Geforce 6600GT (AGP) 128MB (Legend).

I have been worried as Everest says it is running at around 60 degrees (C).
The mobo temp is only around 20 degrees. It makes no difference if the case sides are off.
Games have been crashing or lagging and showing odd artifacts.

I tried to install latest forceware but it crashes the computer.
I can install latest forceware if the computer is in safe mode, or if graphics hardware acceleration is turned off, but then when I restart it starts to load windows (up to the screen with the windows logo and the little green bars moving across the bottom) then the screen goes black except for 4 or 5 little green dots in the top left corner.
I then have had to restart in safe mode (it starts up ok) and uninstall the driver.
Another odd thing is that when I then restart windows it offers to install the "new hardware" and it installs fine, just that games still have problems then and it is version 77.72.

I have tried two different update packs of forceware (81.85 and 81.95).

I have WinXP Pro installed - service pack 2 (haven't reinstalled/formatted in a while)
Mobo is Gigabyte (GA-7DXE i think, cant remember)
Athlon XP 2000+
Have a 400W psu
2 HDD's
2 optical drives
Lots of Hard drive space
Lots of ram
Haven't overclocked or anything

Oh, and I don't think I have formatted/reinstalled windows since I had a Radeon card (which died 'cause the fan melted!?!) and another nvidia before that....

Please help! This is driving me crazy.
Thanks,
Glen

409459 2005-12-02 16:19:00 Hmm very peculiar indeed.

How much RAM do you have?

What make is your PSU?

I suggest the following..

1) Ensure you have the latest chipset drivers for your mobo.

2) Uninstall the nVidia drivers, RESTART and then run Driver Cleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/). The download is at the bottom of the page. I would suggest you clean both nVidia and ATi files. Restart your computer then re-install the forceware drivers.

3) If the above fails to fix your problem, then seriously consider a reformat and fresh install of Windows XP Pro. I do a fresh install every 6 to 8 months or so.

4) If a re-install doesn't help then you may have a faulty or dodgy PSU or even some buggy RAM.

cheers

409460 2005-12-02 22:58:00 Those temps are fine, the 6600GT will get a lot hotter than than and still not have problems .

What video card are you upgrading from? The reason I am asking is many people have had problems swapping from ATI to Nvidia and viasvera, with driver issues .

If you had no problems before the video card upgrade its probably not hardware with the exception of your power supply . However i would consider a fresh reload before spending any money on replacing anything, a fresh install never hurts anyway . You can spend the next 6 hours pissing around with your current install or 1 . 5 hours doing a fresh install of your OS and apps .

409461 2005-12-02 23:27:00 You did plug in the extra power connector didn't you? HadO (796)
409462 2005-12-03 06:00:00 Thanks for everyone's help.

OK
I have 768 MB ram
I have a Purepower Thermaltake 420W supply
I have the latest divers for my mobo (they come with windows, apparently) - do I need to update my motherboard bios?

The changing of drivers didn't seem to work. I did have some old ATI drivers that DriverCleaner got rid of, but it still isn't working (has frozen once, I might try again soon).

I'm upgrading from a Radeon 9800SE, that seemed to work fine 'till it started crashing regularly - I looked inside the case and the fan mounting had melted to the side, stopping the fan from spinning....! I don't know why that happened.

I DO have the extra power plug in. (Tried it without and it came up with a message saying some features disabled because of insufficient power).

Any more things to try before I format windows?

Thanks.

409463 2005-12-05 00:05:00 You should not have to re-install XP, just because you have replaced the video card. The correct order for replacement is to un-install device using device manager, then click no to reboot, then using add/remove programs, un-install the driver software, reboot and follow the windows prompting for driver for new hardware if required.
Sounds to me you have issues with your PSU. Was the ATI card overclocked before the fan melted?, if not, sounds like uneven voltage.

Have you checked BIOS settings for AGP fast write, Aperture size.

Disconnect the power molexs to the 2 optical drives and any other devices not required to test if a power issue, or test the card in a friends PC.

409464 2005-12-05 10:59:00 Hi
When I took the old card out (it was actually an interim card from a friend because the other one had died) I probably didn't uninstall the device, but I believe I uninstalled the drivers, if there were any in add/remove programs (I can't rememeber).
I don't think it is issues with the psu, as it is just new, since I had issues with the old psu when I got the ATI card. The ATI card was never overclocked. I remember what happened with the psu issues and it was a crash and complete reset, while this just crashes to a black screen (with dots in the corner). Although the 12V rail (according to Everest) is running at 12.11V while the other 2 rails shown (+5 and +3.3) are just under the theoretical voltage. I'm not sure if this is bad or even important.

Oh, and I sent the ATI card back to the people who check it and they thought that it's untimely death wasn't our fault. (So it probably wasn't). Maybe. Hopefully.

I don't know how to check BIOS settings for AGP fast write or Aperture size.

I have tested the card in a friend's PC and it seems to work fine...
I will reinstall XP tomorrow anyway 'cause it needs to be done and everything is backed up, but I'll be back to tell of my success or failure.

409465 2005-12-05 21:06:00 I've found how to change AGP fast writes (using NVTweak). There's also a setting for "MAX AGP Rate" - is this what you meant for Aperature Size?
What should they be set to?

409466 2005-12-06 05:00:00 Well, I've formatted and reinstalled Windows and nothing has changed.
It still works when I first install it but won't start up past the WinXP Loading Screen once I have updated the 'forceware' to 81.95.
I doubt there will be any change in running games etc.
Any suggestions?
Should I change the AGP Fast write settings or something?

409467 2005-12-08 11:57:00 Another piece to the 'puzzle'.
I realised that the first time I tried installing the drivers after formatting and reinstalling XP I hadn't installed directx9. I tried turning down the resolution and refresh rates too (don't know if this helped).
Finally I was able to install the 81.95 forceware and reboot without it failing to start up.
BUT...
It still says (in NVidia control panel) that the forceware version is 77.72!
Things still aren't working like they should!

Does anyone know what is going on?
