409897 2005-12-03 16:10:00 Im in hong kong on vacation right now.I will be using orcon 256k broadband next month.

One of the guy who's flatting this year is moving out and taking the modem and router with him.

I am hoping to purchase a modem and router here in hk however there are so many different kinds of modem. What kind of specs should I look at?

409898 2005-12-03 17:16:00 I'd suggest you are considering the purchase over there in order to save a few dollars..........better you consider the hassles you'll have if the device fails to work properly and you need it repaired/replaced under warranty.......personally I'd never buy electronic goods overseas i'd buy them in nz .......much easier if you have any problem drcspy (146)

Think just to save yourself a couple of dollars, you are gambling on whether it will actually be OK to use, and the fact if you have any issues with your connection or modem it will not be a telepermitted device.

So let him take the Orcon account as well and you start another with free modem and installation. Where's the problem?

If you need a better router than one of the freebies, get one from Dick Smiths for the simple reason they have an on the spot swapout policy.
Nothing worse than having to wait for a replacement unit or a repair on yours for a week or more if it craps out.
I can source them cheaper than I can get them at DSE but the convenience outweighs the saving of a few bucks, I've had to return 2 out of about 50 units purchased and they were swapped out straightaway no questions asked.

from DSE website
Why a swap-out warranty?
We know how important your network is. The last thing you want is to be left high and dry waiting for a resolution. All DSE networking products carry our 1 year swap out hardware warranty. In the unlikely event of product failure, simply return the product to your nearest outlet with your receipt where we will swap it out with a direct replacement, it's nearest equivalent or we will refund your purchase.
