409757 2005-12-26 15:59:00 im running windows xp, i got the software from the guy i bought the drive from but its still reading as a 300n, not a 300i as said on the drive, for some reason it wont install drivers as a 300i ???

the 300i won't install as a 300i but as a 300c or a 300n despite what it says on the box
very few people have managed to get this drive to work properly
you may have to try many different brands of dvd and may get lucky, i read that princo will work with it

409758 2005-12-28 01:47:00 Well i downloaded the firmware and installed it was told it was successful, it still reads/writes cd's and reads dvd's, and i can record onto a dvd using ashampoo burning suite 5, BUT it comes back saying successful, but its not as when i read the log it says errors, also when i try to read the data put on that dvd in windows and it tells me to insert disk (which is already in there) but if i go back into ashampoo with that same disk to put more data on it it tells me what is on there already no problems, so why cant windows explorer see it???? i would go and buy another one but dont have the funds right now, and i bought this one second hand dont really want to throw away that money i paid for it. thanks for helpfull info. lisamarie01 (6731)
409759 2005-12-28 02:04:00 Can you try the dvd you wrote in a m8's dvd recorder to see whether it's an explorer issue on your machine rather than a drive problem? bartsdadhomer (80)
409760 2005-12-28 04:31:00 I hate to say this Lisamarie but it sounds very much like you bought a dud. As others have said, the online history for these drives is not very good at all and now that we know you bought it second-hand, I am asking myself why the previous owner sold it. It may well be for exactly the same reasons/problems you are experiencing now.

You might have to abandon it, but that would not be too great a tragedy because a range of very good drives can be bought for less than $100. I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Cheers

Seriously... Try a Firmware update, otherwise you'll spend forever and a day lookng for drivers but you wont find any so dont bother coz its a DVD Drive... *Drivers* as such dont exist!

409763 2006-07-11 16:57:00 Well I tried to install the firmware but it doesnt let me cause it tells me I need to install the things in the CD first. If I just had the CD I could get it to work. punkristo (9354)
409764 2006-07-11 20:22:00 You have been trying for over 7 months to resurrect a second-hand and obsolete drive with a known history of serious problems. Sounds to me like you are on a hiding to nowhere right now.

A wide selection of quality drives can be purchased for between $60 and $70 (check pricespy) and they will provide a guaranteed result. That is the recommended solution, and that's what you should do. If you had invested that much time in some odd jobs you'd have earned enough to buy two drives by now.

Unless you find a fairy godmother out there somewhere, I don't think you are going to get any further with this one.
It will end up costing you more than the price of a new drive in coasters if you keep going.

Cheers

409765 2006-07-12 00:43:00 Under Windows XP I think it even has software anyway. You don't need anymore software. The software that comes with the drive just makes life easier but to burn a basic CD or DVD.

Does the info on the net says it runs on Windows XP (or the windows that you are using)?

I think either driver issue or bad drive. I got a DVD RW drive some months ago, installed without a hitch, 3min to burn a CD or a DVD in 5 mins. I have in total just burnt 2 items on it. I used Nero which came with my drive, a LG brand. I even connected the drive at the wrong channel and it still worked but when I did the speed test it was slow so I popped it on Primary Master while I have a SATA HDD.

I had an issue with like yours. I bought a Mini PCI card for my laptop which is a part like yours I have read. I upgraded from its 56k modem. Its a OEM part that is not sold to customers individually but they equipped to the laptop via design. Such as if you bought that particular branded computer it will come with it. So drivers are v hard to find. It was a 3Com Network/modem card 100/10 + 56k. The drivers on 3Com did not work, I had to search the internet and got the drivers from a company such as Micro while my laptop was IBM, I guess they shared the same part. The drives was not on the IBM website either becos they had a v slightly different model, I think they had a B at the back of the model # and my one I bought didn't have the B. The drivers didn't work either.

I am thinking this HP drive was not a boxed up item that was sold in stores. It was a drive that was supplied to manufacturers only. Thus the drivers are not freely available nor are they publicised. Chances I think is if you get that, it may be on one of the assembler/manufacturer's website.

However I had issues as well. The modem was fine and if via a router it was fine or a hub via a straight network cable. At home via a crossover cable, the network would connect but it would time out. This item I got on eBay given Mini PCI was so expensive. IBM agreed to repair it as machine was under warranty still, didn't find anything wrong as it was temperamental so when they got it, it was fine. I asked them to run a test proggie from 3Com and then they replaced it with a new one the newer one with the B at the end of the model #. This one had issues as well such as it modem was temperamental, sometimes it just didn't work after after a restart or a resit of the card it came back or sometimes you had to wait some days. Then I biffed that. Got myself a IBM/Intel card and that was worst the modem had issues connecting. Biffed it again, and got another eBay 3Com card and this one is apparently fine. So it could v well be just a card with a bad history, it could be your case as well.

Having said that these days I don't like laptops anymore, got sick of them :D they may look cool and such a portable computer but the bulk gets to me. Going travelling with a digital camera which I shoot RAW (big files) so I am comtemplating if I can take my ultraportable laptop or just a portable HDD. A PC is much better if you take the correct precautions, getting good parts and such and in reality the good ones does not cost more than the cheap ones - not significantly anyway. They are cheap enof bought new than used and NZ market is quite competitive at most you may pay $150-300 more than overseas but you get a warranty here (provided you don't get all the high end items). This is internal components because I find it hard to bring back a keyboard and a monitor on an aeroplane :o

Edit. Try to look at your DVD drive and see if there is a part number on it. Then try to search that via google if you can get a driver. Chances is you may need to try diff drivers even if they look the same, no harm in doing that. 300i could just be a label, they may be different part numbers behind it or different revisions or such. But you also have to think about how long you want to do this for because you don't want to continue wasting coasters. My issue was modem, network so I didn't need to waste anything apart from my own time/energy.
