If you bought it second-hand, there is an even stronger possibility that it is a dud.

Cheers

409751 2005-12-04 19:34:00 As bartsdadhomer has said you don’t need any drivers for a DVD drive.

I suggest you remove all the HP DVD software, and drivers you may have installed, and find a different burning program, I like Nero.

Note burning software is different than firmware, software is a program that you use to do stuff on your computer, firmware is a small set of instructions that you flash to the DVD drive so it knows how to behave, drivers are instructions that the operating system uses to talk to the device/DVD.

On the hp site, you can download the firmware no worries, if you are trying to get "HP DVD Writer dvd300i Installation Disc Set" they will need to post this to you, but you shouldnt need these discs to get the drive working.

there is no option to download any drivers the only option for her writer is a cd and they don't send to nz

There are other files there for different models but from what i've read on other forums they won't work
As I posted earlier, all the searching I did only found problems with this drive
Stacks of people were complaining the software for this drive caused all sorts of problems with their system
There's no telling some people

409753 2005-12-04 23:09:00 Again what operating system are we talking about?

You sure you dont mean the adaptec aspi drivers?

Some programs (even if u use XP) need these drivers, sometimes for burning.

I would try different software.

409756 2005-12-26 11:45:00 I have a HP branded but CDRW drive. Its parallel from those chunky cases if you jack open it its actually a internal IDE drive, haha.

Anyway, my drive is the same thing, it used to work but now it works to read CDs in win98 but if on winXP it reads but sometimes it can be choosy and halt the system until the CD is pulled out or if that does not open a force restart is required. Within any windows version if you try to open a unclosed CD like a blank CDR or CDRW disc it will crash the system. Likewise if you try to make a CD it crashes.

I say buy another one, I don't trust HP that much, same goes with many pple on this forum.

I think most drives don't need drivers in winXP if it reads it should write as well. WinXP I heard has writing software as well, if not there are Nero and Adaptec softwares available.
