About why we pay more in New Zealand.

1382507 2014-08-25 22:35:00 It's no secret why we pay more in NZ, retailers have practiced the "charge what the market will stand" model for decades and we are a small remote market of little interest to the big players. Shock horror companies are all about profit, to make one in a market this size they set larger margins than they do in bigger markets.

Of course we get ripped off and they could charge us less and still make money in many cases but I look at it similar to the difference between grocery items in the supermarket vs the local service station. One sells high volumes at a low mark up and one sells low volumes at a high mark up. On a global scale almost all our retailers are closer to the service station in size.

It sux but it's the price we pay for living in our little corner in the world which is much nicer in most respects compared to larger countries with cheaper prices.

1382508 2014-08-25 23:40:00 Those broadband prices are pretty accurate. It's better if you sell Naked DSL coz you can drop the "average homeline cost" but the naked Circuit itself costs a whole bunch more. Problem is it then costs more for a VDSL2 circuit too, not just ADSL2+, the VDSL2 side *again* costs more. Chilling_Silence (9)

Depends what it is, not much use buying something half the price from USA when shipping costs the same anyway and you're right back where you started.

I'd like to see Jaycar defend some of their exorbitant prices though, when Farnell and RS can sell the same thing much cheaper.
