Could they not have done this from day 1 ??
Was it really so awefull to give us a start menu . And yet they still wont conceed & make the start menu it as we want it.

Thank God that charms thingy is going going gone
Looks like there is going to be the ability to "lock in" the normal Desktop mode, say in business environments

1381452 2014-08-11 06:08:00 And can you imagine all the supporters of W8 suddenly having to defend W9 return of the start menu.
W8 is in the same league as the zune and the surface. MS will keep on trying to flog the dead horse until it finally admits its dead.

1381453 2014-08-11 06:11:00 Having tiles like the pictures on a start menu will be a HUGE PITA !!

Lots of people don't actually use the old start menu in day to day use apart from shutting down ( big deal). The start menu as it is on W8 /8.1 works fine. Its the old story, people who don't know how to use something as its designed always say its bad. As it stands at the moment, there's nothing that cant be done when compared to the old versions ( Pre 8) Oh wait -- people don't know there's a right click on their mouse :p

I hardly ever use the Start Menu. I usually right click the task bar & add a Desk Top tool bar. This way I can keep the desk top icons hidden and only have to make a single click to select an item. I also use the search facility which takes you straight to the required program. This together with Icons on the task bar for favorites makes the Start Menu unnecessary.

1381455 2014-08-11 09:14:00 And what will it enable you to do that you can't do now? (Aside from spend hugely to be fashionable. (c)Apple) R2x1 (4628)

There will of course be other changes, some obvious, some not, only time will tell :)

Don't worry, I'm sure a 3rd party utility will pop up to remove them...

1381458 2014-08-11 09:56:00 I think that Windows 8 is UGLY and cumbersome, those who like it have a case of 'The Emperors Clothes" . Apart from starting up faster I found nothing to endear it to me. I look forward to Windows 9. Even some of Microsoft's employees don't like Windows 8 and compare it to Vista (which I prefer to Windows 8). Anyway each to their own. (their allowed to be wrong :-)
