1394279 2015-02-27 21:54:00 Maybe it's noise bursts on the line causing temporary packet loss thus affecting throughput?

You did mention you had issues with your ADSL and phone randomly ringing earlier...

You did mention you had issues with your ADSL and phone randomly ringing earlier...I think that may have been fixed. I lost my phone altogether for 28 hours during the week and the Chorus man said there was a wet connection out in the street which he fixed. Too early to tell whether that problem is going to recur. He implied it wouldn't have affected the VDSL/ADSL.

BTW I'm still losing the connection occasionally, but now a network adapter disable/enable seems to kick it into life. That was the situation with ADSL. Still it would be nice to track that down as well.

1394281 2015-02-28 01:23:00 Try a longer test in Windows 10 and see if the problem is also there? Agent_24 (57)
1394282 2015-02-28 02:21:00 Try a longer test in Windows 10 and see if the problem is also there? That is a good idea. I'm not sure when I'll be able to do it though as I won't be able to any real work while that is going on. It occurs to me as I write that what I ought to be able to do is leave my laptop live on the network and if the main PC hangs up see if the laptop can see the net. Tony (4941)
1394283 2015-02-28 19:00:00 Here are two speed tests done on the same day. "fast" was at 8:08 am, "slow" was at 10:13 pm. I don't think the times are particularly significant as I could produce examples at each end of the range at most times of the day. The numbers on the dial are of course the upload speed at the time I took the screenshot.

The main PC hung up and the laptop (wired connection) didn't. So I've made sure all the network adapter configuration settings on the PC are the same as on the laptop and we'll see what happens.

1394287 2015-03-01 01:08:00 Have you tried the latest network card drivers straight from the manufacturer, preferably the chipset manufacturer? Don't rely on Windows Update to give you drivers that make sense... Agent_24 (57)

'Fraid so. I did that fairly early in the piece. The driver is dated November 2014. I got it from Realtek. In fact the drivers on the PC are later than on the laptop, but I'm loth to fix what ain't broke on the laptop.

So far the PC has appeared to hang, (I get the yellow exclamation point in the notification area), but if I try to access a website it springs into life. Still early days though...
