2015-02-26 20:02:00 | I'll probably immediately be proved wrong, but everything finally seems to be working. It looks like setting the PPP back to "auto" might have fixed it. I changed away from that when it looked like everything was going to sleep in an attempt to keep it alive. I am noticing that occasionally accessing the web seems to take a bit of time after things have been idle for a while, but it does spring into life eventually. I'm currently getting a ping of 16ms, download 23.54 upload 9.26. On the other hand, occasionally the download goes right down to maybe 3Mbps, presumably because of congestion, although I wouldn't have thought the VDSL uptake was that high in my area. Because I don't want to fix what isn't broke I'm not going to try out the borrowed Telecom router again, so the access denied message will have to remain a mystery. :) Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

Don't forget the ADSL users as well... all runs on the same cabinet AFAIK. |

2015-02-27 05:55:00 | It's likely not the cabinet, it's almost guaranteed to be your ISP :-/ | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2015-02-27 08:43:00 | It's likely not the cabinet, it's almost guaranteed to be your ISP :-/I don't quite follow that. Are you saying that Actrix is throttling my VDSL speed at random times? If I look at speedtest, when it is going full speed the graph is almost perfectly even - much more than it ever was under ADSL. When the speed is less, its totally jagged, i.e. it is not a constant 3Mbps, but from 1 to 7 (for example). This is much more uneven than with ADSL. | Tony (4941) | |
2015-02-27 09:48:00 | I would have thought you're just not obtaining maximum speeds due to the oversubscription of bandwidth. If it's bouncing all over the show, it's possibly some poor QoS. Is this for national or international tests?
