In the first post you mentioned you had mint 13, post above mint 17.

mint 17 may be to much for it, like most OS's as they develop they need more power.
Mint 13 System Specs: 512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).

mint 17: Reasonable performance

Processor: Pentium 4, 1,3 Ghz
RAM: 1 GB
Video card: 64 MB dedicated memory
Hard disk space: 10 GB

Smooth performance

Processor: Pentium 4, 2 Ghz
RAM: 1,5 GB
Video card: 128 MB dedicated memory
Hard disk space: 20 GB

Good point about Mint 17.
I just download a freshee as I couldn't locate Mint 13. Have to see if I can find one.
No, nothing untoward has happened to the netbook.
It has 1, 1 GB ram stick installed.
Would like to update, but been told, not as easy as desktop.

Thanks for the info.

1394204 2015-02-18 02:52:00 Hindsight and all that, if you get it working create and save an image of the hdd somewhere.
Kids and PCs = diabolical combination. They have the magical ability to break anything. You often hear the term Idiot proof even though we all know better but seldom does anyone risk making the claim "kid proof"

They haven't gummed up the vents with something have they? if it's getting hot it might run slow.

There are a lot of versions of linux around and some have versions designed for slower hardware that might work better, I don't know enough to recommend one myself but it might be worth a bit of research (puppy linux does come to mind but it didn't work for me when I tried it). Maybe even try in between versions of MINT if they are still available.

Here's some google results that look promising.

Computer looks good.
I just looked, I have 30 Linux iso backed up, but don't know the file number of the Mint 13, as none say that.
I'll check out the other ones you have, above.
