1394056 2015-02-11 02:01:00 Self-built PC (not built by me, bought off a friend) has been working great. Recently, after shutdown, it is unable to start again. When the power button is pressed, system whirs, 2 lights on board go on inside the case, 1 beep, and that's pretty much it. Nothing shows up on the monitor, I have tested the monitor separately and it works perfectly. The power button light flickers on and off, then goes dark, but the whole system is still on and making noise. I have not moved the case, or done anything differently before and after this issue. One time I just left it on and eventually it came up to a system restore, and I restored and it worked just that once, then after shutdown never was able to boot up again. Not sure if this restore is related to the problem or coincidental. I have tried reconnecting the graphics card, plugging into another power outlet/wall, and am stumped. Please advise. I do not know the intricacies of PCs and I did not build this computer, so in your response please be kind and give simple instructions. mrgershom (17338)
1394057 2015-02-11 02:49:00 Could be any one of a number of things. Try this --- open the case remove and reinstall all the cards and memory, blow any dust / Dirt out of or around the slots , check that all the cables are properly installed, by unplugging then reinstalling the connectors, close the case and remove all the peripherals, except the monitor, mouse, keyboard, try restarting see if it boots up.

Assuming its not displaying the BIOS or any other type of writing on start:

Then there may be some sort of hardware failure. You can try tapping the Delete key on boot, to see if the BIOS appears, if it does, reset it to defaults - If not could be a CMOS Battery gone flat, about $5 from the warehouse.

"If" something has failed its a process of elimination to find out what, could be a power Supply, while its starting the PC it may not have enough power to run it, BUT to test that you really need another Known good Power supply to plug in to see if it makes any difference.

Could also be a Motherboard turned turtle.

Could be a stuck power Switch -- To test that you need to follow the leads from the switch to the pins on the motherboard, disconnect them, and using a small flat bladed screwdriver short out the + & - power pins for the pwr switch by touching them both at the same time with the screwdriver blade, this will kick the PC into life and it will either go or not.

BUT on a note IF ITS HARDWARE , and you are not happy to be testing hardware or plugging /unplugging items then it may need the services of a computer tech or someone who can do it.
