411065 2005-12-08 05:23:00 Say you have just acquired new hardware, and loaded a driver plus the installation programm to make the device work - but it doesn't. Is there anywhere on the internet that can "see" inside your machine to find out why and suggesst a fix? eef2 (1904)
411066 2005-12-08 05:34:00 What hardware is it?
Some brand name suppliers such as dell, hp etc have online testing tools that will detect their own hardware and suggest drivers

Windows update will also do the same if you are runing xp although downloading sound or video drivers from MS update is not wise

There are apps around that will detect "unknown hardware" such as device identifier etc.
There are also programs around that will give you a system summary such as Belarc Advisor, and will list all your hardware

411067 2005-12-08 07:24:00 It's an old Acer scanner. I've got all the updated drivers and so on.
I'm running Win 98 SE and have Belarc adviser installed.
I've also accessed this forum before and have exhaused all repliers suggestions.
I bought it for $6 on Trade Me, so I think now it may have a munted circuit inside. The only thing, though, the reliable sellers told me that they had got a driver that worked it off some photocopier firm. So that's maybe my best lead before I hand to the street collectors on non-organic collection day.

Belarc advisor doesn't show that it has been installed, but the windows remove/install windows shows that "MiraScan V3.42" has been loaded as an installed program. This can be searched for in this forum for previous enquiries I have made.

Finally, and very briefly, The Setup Application, version 1, 12, 4, 0 is from ACARD Technology Corp. a setup for a 32 bit configuration which I assume is what Win 98 is.

411068 2005-12-08 08:29:00 does it have a separate power supply or is it just a cable?
the power supplies crap out on a regular basis
does windows actually detect the scanner at all?
does it warm up or light up?
have u tried another USB cable?

411069 2005-12-08 10:37:00 yes, yes, and yes. telecom is to blame yes? eef2 (1904)
411070 2005-12-08 10:41:00 Sorry, thought I was on another thread. Silly me.
It has aower supply. Windows does not detect the scanner, but it does light up and get warm. The copying lamp works as well.
