410877 2005-12-07 08:12:00 I am about to install broadband. Telecom say use filters but a recent letter in PCW mag Nov 2005 says not requiried. I have 4 phone extensions + one for sky. What (if anything) will happen if I don't use filters? :help: kitkat (9381)

Yes, you do need a filter, preferably configured as a splitter at the point of entry. That way you can run a clean line to your adsl modem and pass all the phones through a single filter. The alternative is to put filters on every device that plugs into a telephone outlet, except for your adsl modem.

If you don't use one, your dsl speed may be poor, you may get intermittent dropping of your connection, and your phones may suffer interference.

Don't know who wrote the letter, but they may have been referring to a specific set of circumstances.

Edit: Found the letter, what they are saying is that you don't need a filter if there is nothing else connected to your phone line. I guess that's ok if you don't have a telephone, fax, burglar alarm, answering machine or any other device on your line, but that would be pretty rare.

Bottom line? You need a filter or a splitter.

Hmmmmmm...my stepdaughter bootlegged a phone into the guest room without any filters on it, and I have DSL on the line. Her only statement after being found out was a very high-pitched tone on the phone.

410881 2005-12-07 23:49:00 As others have said, you need a filter for each phone plugged into the telephone line your ADSL modem uses. I've never tried using ADSL without them but you never know, it might work without too many side effects. You could always test it out before you buy additional filters. :D maccrazy (6741)

I think not having a DSL filter on a fax would be a bad idea....as faxs depend on strange music and tones to get it done.....adding a high pitched tone would probably confuse it a lot......

410883 2005-12-08 00:26:00 I have had people decide to use the phone while I have been in the process of hooking up there ADSL modem, Excessive line noise was apperent in each case so far, Even kids yelling over the line REALLY FREAKING LOUD AND WITHOUT STOPPING didn't get through.... Metla (12)
410884 2005-12-08 00:51:00 If you have only one phone on the system, you would "probably" get away with not having a filter, apart from any noise you might notice on the phone. The filter isolates the low-frequency phone from the high-frequency signals used for ADSL. If you have a number of phones, they are likely to suffer from the same noise problem, and they will probably load the high-frequencies down enough to severely reduce your "high speed". If you have any traditional black bakelite phones (or even semi-modern ones with real bells) no filters would almost certainly give you a 9600 bps ADSL. :D

Use filters.
