410786 2005-12-06 23:39:00 Hi,I have a 20gig hardrive which after a 'crash' has gone from 60% full to 97% full, how do I regain my empty space?I have disabled system restore which has given some of it back, but I would like to have all of it back.I'm running XP with service pack 2,any help would be appreciated,as I don't want to have to format.
cheers

410787 2005-12-06 23:55:00 defrag it Prescott (11)
410788 2005-12-07 00:07:00 And use ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) to get rid of the temp files etc on it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
410789 2005-12-07 00:08:00 defrag it
XP won't defrag with any less than 15% free space if windows is only reporting 3% it won't do it
Defragging won't remove excess files anyway it only rearranges them
What sort of "crash" was it?
Has Windows blocked access to bad sectors and reduced the drives size?
Run disk cleanup, ccleaner to rid the OS of uneccessary files

410790 2005-12-07 00:41:00 Thanks for the replies,i should add that this is the second time this has happened and that the harddrive has some bad sectors that did not disappear when I last did a reinstall of XP 4 weeks ago.Looks like I will have to do another format.
cheers

410791 2005-12-07 00:44:00 I would get another hdd, as u may have more probs later, with the bad sectors. Speedy Gonzales (78)

2nd time?....take a hint, it's knackered.
bad sectors don't "disappear" they are still there, the OS blocks them off and won't write to them
Once a drive develops bad sectors, it will keep getting more
Sometimes the drive may last for ages, othertimes it may last a day or less

Time for a new one
