410649 2005-12-06 12:39:00 Does such a creature exist so 2 pc's can have their usb2 cables go to a splitter that then has 1 cable output for printer?

Previoulsy when using printer cable I had switching device to achieve but looking on web nothing seems to be there for USB...yet.

410651 2005-12-06 18:42:00 There are USB switches that would do the job:

The Belkin item here

nearly does the business in that the 2 ports on back would accept the printer leads from my 2 PC's, but the plug configuration isnt right,; no doubt I could get an adapter for that.
ie the plug end needs to be type that fits into back of USB2 printer

410653 2005-12-11 21:54:00 I'd have thought that a normal USB A-B cable would have connected the switch to your printer? Terry Porritt (14)
410654 2005-12-12 00:45:00 The "square" (B) USB connectors are used only at the non-computer end; The "rectangular" (A) connectors are used only at the computer end.

So a USB switch, or hub, or switching hub, should have both sorts of socket. If it takes 2 computers, it must have 2 B sockets, and one A socket for each device it can handle.

410656 2005-12-12 03:14:00 Those hubs on the DSE site are ordinary hubs. They have only one CPU connector. DSE used to have 2 in 4 out USB switches; I bought one from them. But it was on special, so I guess they didn't sell very well, and they didn't get any more. ;) Graham L (2)

Note it says USB 1.1 also.

410658 2005-12-12 04:12:00 A more specific search ("usb switch" then "XH6820") in DSE found the support page for the XH6820, which is a 2 in 4 out switch they once stocked. The XH4300 is just a hub. The downloadable PDF manual for the XH6820 describes it as having
"...
two type B USB upstream connectors for the computers
four type A USB downstream connectors for peripherals
one USB host selection switch ..." I'm not sure if that's the one I've got ...

What DSE stock now are just hubs: 1 in; 2 or 4 out. A switch is not a hub. A hub is not a switch. It's the internal logic and external connectors which matter.
