410816 2005-12-08 08:22:00 Thanks for the replies, folks.

Speedy - I tried your suggestion and used your link. It did an automated install and reported that installation was successful, but when I tested it by going to a web page that requires Flash, the page posted a message saying that Macromedia Flash is required and giving a download link which led to the same page as your link. I am assuming that the page looked for or tried to activate Flash and concluded it wasn't there. Is there any other way of testing that Flash is present and working on a machine?

Drcspy - I weren't smokin' nuthin'. I did 6 more downloads this morning and got the following file sizes - 247, 193, 218, 248, 368,and 249KB. All those files were called Flash Player and none had an extension. Of my 10 total downloads, only 1 (at 150KB) had an extension (.exe). In light of your comment that your download was 368KB I went back to my 368KB download of last night (I presume the file was identical to the 368KB one I got this morning) and added .exe to the filename. When I tried to run it I got a small blank window with Macromedia Flash (or similar) in the Title bar and nothing more happened even though I waited for some time. I deduce from this that if the file was not corrupted (apart from the incomplete name) then the version contained was not compatible with Win 95. Are you certain that the link is for a v. 5 download?
In case you are wondering if there is something wrong with the connection or system, in the midst of the fun and games last night I successfully downloaded a 1.5 or so MB AVG update. And before this morning's lot, I did the download from Speedy's link. I have done other downloads on this machine recently and all were faultless.

Soooo - any more suggestions, anyone? In case not, thanks again for the help that has been offered.

410817 2005-12-08 22:17:00 I have made some progress, on which I'll report tonight or over the weekend.
But Speedy asked if I was looking for Flash Player or Flash Plugin. I need to confirm that they are different and if so, in what way?

410818 2005-12-13 23:52:00 Progress!! But not all the way.

I renamed the 9th download (which was 368KB) flash player.exe and tried Start, Run. It opened a window with the title Flash and had File, Help etc menus. Help About reported v. 5, so that answers that question, drcspy. But again, trying the web page which requires Macromedia Flash (it is an interactive page) produced the "for this you need MMF - download it from here" message. This is with both Flash Player 5 and 7 installed. Starting 5 requires you to select a file to open - so perhaps opening a web page needing MMF does not automatically activate this. Further, in tooling around the MM website I found a page for testing your Flash installation. Apparently it should show a line of animations if a working installation is present - I didn't get the line.

So I am back to the question I haven't found an answer for - are Flash Player and Flash plugin different, and does one need both for full Flash functionality? It could be that Flash Player is for manually opening a Flash file (as Acrobat Reader can be used to open a .pdf) and that a Flash Plugin is necessary for a web page to automatically activate Flash functions - similar to the automatic starting of Acrobat Reader on downloading a .pdf file, although this is different because it presumably results from the association of a discreet (.pdf) file with Acrobat reader. The v. 5 that I have downloaded curtesy drcspy presumably does the former, and perhaps the v. 7 I installed "successfully" should do the latter but doesn't work with Win 95 (although it is labelled Flash Player).

So again - any more info/comments/offerings?
