410954 2005-12-08 00:30:00 I set up a dialup connection on a computer inserting the correct password phone number and username. Ive done it before on the same computer but my latest attempt failed. So the problem is I can actually connect to the internet I think i am atleast but when I try go any site www.google.com nothing happens. The blue bar tries reach the end in internet explorer but in the middle it goes back to the start the repeats ie later tries to load ms search teh same thing happens.

Its not only this any thing that uses the internet doesnt work msn etc. I know the connection works but not on that computer

410955 2005-12-08 01:05:00 Wrong modem drivers or knackered modem maybe, a knackered modem or wrong drivers will sometimes let you connect but go nowhere.
What OS?
Is the machine virus and spyware free?

410956 2005-12-08 01:50:00 It's more likely to be a lack of DNS server, isn't it? The modem has negotiated with the ISP, and a connection is established. :D Graham L (2)
410957 2005-12-08 02:44:00 Yes the computer is spyware free . I have connected it to the internet before and it worked but I didnt actually plan to use it for the internet so I deleted the connection which means the drivers are correct or atleast working .

I dont get what you mean by knackered modem do you mean damaged because it has been moved to another pci slot when I was fitting a new graphics card and a slot fan blower/extractor is right up against it maybe thats the cause .

Im gonna try the winsock fix with the reg entries when I get them time so ill get back to you on that

Also please expand on how it could be a lack of dns server and how could I possibly fix that .

410958 2005-12-08 03:18:00 Is Norton Internet Security installed?

If so, the proxy service to this can stop, and when it stops u stop. You can connect, but u cant browse, until its enabled again.

410959 2005-12-08 04:00:00 Try entering http://210.48.100.45 in the address bar. If that gets you to this site, you haven't got the address of a DNS server in your configuration. That means that you can't use the human-friendly form of Internet addressing. Graham L (2)
410960 2005-12-08 09:25:00 A while ago I had the same problem, and it was a "winsock" problem. I got the link to the fix here on F1 so before you do too much, have a look here for it. It was a really small download, and it fixed it immediatly. I think I also bypassed the problem one other time on son in laws puter by installing Firefox. supergran (108)
