411585 2005-12-10 04:04:00 Which brand of 200Gb HD is the most reliable?. Is the Western Digital any good?
Would appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Some people say that Western Digital is one of the worst hdds to get.

Seagate / Samsung / Maxtor would be better.

411589 2005-12-10 04:37:00 I've had a Western Digital hard drive (80gb bought from DSE), and it's survived so far about 4 years or so without any problems.

I also have a Maxtor drive which I haven't had problems with.

I had a bad encounter with a Fujitsu drive - it happened to be part of a faulty batch, and unfortunately I didn't claim a replacement under warranty quickly enough.

Thanks for that. It looks like it is the luck of the draw!!

411591 2005-12-10 05:00:00 I heard somewhere (though don't quote me on this), that hard drives which will fail tend to fail within the first year. So in any case, if something goes wrong, make a warrantly claim quickly so that it doesn't hit you in the pocket. somebody (208)
411592 2005-12-10 05:26:00 Have been using Seagates for many, many years without any problem. Proven to be good and reliable, as far as I am concerned. bk T (215)
411593 2005-12-10 06:01:00 Here are the ones to avoid:

IBM (the deskstar is known as the deathstar)
Fujitsu

I think that

Western Digital and Maxtor are not that flash

Seagate and Samsung are good (you can get a 5 year warranty on some Seagate drives).

There is a reliability survey on StorageReview (http://www.storagereview.com/) but I think you need to register to use it.

Some models from makers were better than others .. just keep a backup.
