| 411320 | 2005-12-09 04:41:00 | I am using XP Pro and after a normal shut down the following was received on bootup the next day "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair." I have tried this and keep going back to the same message. As my knowledge is limited and the PC is under warranty it has been returned to the technicians who built it. I appear to be getting fobbed off when I ask for a progress report. Does this appear to be a difficult problem to solve? Any technician comment would be appreciated. I hope this isn't a "how long is a piece of string" question. |

Easy fix is to replace the ntfs.sys, but from a bit of googling some people seem to have this problem persist after reformatting/reinstalling and only on that machine. Hard drive works OK on a different machine, but put it back in the original machine and the error occurs again. It is possible that your machine has fallen into the more difficult pile, however they should be straight up with you and let you know that is the case. How long have they had the machine for now? |

So it could take a wee while to attempt to isolate which is bad. You would probably need to check it in a known good motherboard of the same model. They might just attempting to install Windows, over and over again. :D I've got a laptop like this at work - it seems from time to time to result in a corrupt NTFS filesystem. Everything will be okay for weeks and then the corruption strikes. Alas, the warranty repairer just keeps putting new hard drives in it (3 so far) despite us saying that "please don't just change the hard drive". I'm currently thinking that the hard drive is getting too hot, as the internal cooling isn't working properly. Sigh. :badpc: |
