411344 2005-12-09 04:25:00 I've recently changed my OS from Win98 to Win2000 (clean install) and discovered that every now and again, the CD/DVD drive won't recognise that there is a disc in it. If I reboot with the disc in, then it's fine and can read it etc. But often if I open it and change a disc, it will say there's nothing in it and 'please insert disc...'

Seems strange that it has just happened since a clean install by a computer company. I doubt that it just decided to become faulty on that particular day... Everything else is fine...

I have the latest firmware & no faults showing in the device manager.

Seeing as the drive only about 10 mths old I guess I could get it swapped, but unless there's a simple answer...?

Cheers.

Does the CD/DVD drive spin up when you put the disk in?

411346 2005-12-09 07:10:00 Yes it does and the light flashes. I even tried uninstalling InCD but it still does it randomly. Bruiser_NZ (9395)
411347 2005-12-09 21:42:00 Have you ever run a lens cleaner CD on the drive ?
If not it wouldn't hurt to try one, they are not expensive and may fix the problem

411349 2005-12-11 03:36:00 I have this problem on a few occasions and have researched the hell out of it and the conclusion is that is a problem with win2k.

If you look in your event log you will see warnings about the cdrom drive, normally something about a timeout or disconnect.

You can minimize the problem by disabling the removable storage service, as it can get unhappy, and rather forgetful about what cd was last in the drive.
