411202 2005-12-08 23:10:00 Have done a search for startup requirements and I know there have been a few.

What files are really needed.

Running Win98SE and there are 14 files on the startup window, 1 appears twice which I have unticked:

ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
Avg7_cc
Avg7_amsvr
C_MediaMixer
CriticalUpdate
Adata_plugin
LoadPowerProfile
ScheduleingAgent
PersFW
NicrosoftOfficeStartup
OfficeStartup
Viralock

Thanks for any help.

411203 2005-12-08 23:24:00 Get this (www.merijn.org) unzip hijackthis into its own folder, scan and copy and paste the log here.

It'll be better.

411205 2005-12-09 09:21:00 You can safely get rid of:

C_MediaMixer
CriticalUpdate
Adata_plugin
LoadPowerProfile
ScheduleingAgent
PersFW
NicrosoftOfficeStartup
OfficeStartup

I don't know what viralock is without doing a google search...

After you remove them, reboot. Otherwise if you suffer a system crash or freeze later on, when you reboot then, the programes you removed from the startup list will be back.

I recommend grabbing a program called 'More Properties' - do a google search for it. It's free, small, and allows you jump into the startup list and delete what you want easily + other handy tweaks. Similar to TweakUI.

Also - check to see that you don't have any programes scheduled to run i.e. defragmenter... or the ScheduleingAgent will always load up.

411206 2005-12-09 10:09:00 This is the program to use to switch off the unwanted entries, very good, I have used it for years on both Win98SE and Win2K:

411207 2005-12-09 21:29:00 Bruiser_nz thanks for that. Have just taken over this older pc and Viralock is in there.
Google shows it as an e-mail block:

ViraLock is an anti-virus software package that prevents the spread of e-mail borne viruses by preventing them from leaving an infected computer. Aimed at individuals and small businesses (a network version is in development) ViraLock encrypts addresses found in e-mail programs so that a virus cannot replicate by sending itself out. It's intended as a complement to current anti-virus software products, and works automatically and transparently in the background.

Having unticked the items you listed and re-booted, this little window still appears:

Error.
Unable to start the application. Invalid class resource.
Unexpected failure.
OK

Ctrl-Alt-Del
shows
System Config Utility
Explorer
Avgcc
Systray
Rnnpp

As running.

411209 2005-12-09 21:50:00 I'd have thought that PersFw ie. personal firewall is a must to have run at startup.

Another must have is ScanRegistry, with the scanregw.exe having the /autorun switch. This is the util that saves the registry first bootup each day, without that, if something goes wrong then a previous registry can't be restored and you're in the poo!

411211 2005-12-09 22:07:00 Err is that it? Of the hijackthis log?

It looks a tad small!

Those entries look OK to me.
