411189 2005-12-08 21:35:00 For the first time ever I'm about to copy to DVD. My writer supports both - and +. I'm wondering which disks to buy - is one format better?

Thx.

411191 2005-12-08 21:53:00 It depends on what you're planning on playing the dvd on later .

Some standalone DVD players wont play either . In which case, it doesnt matter whether u burn to + or - .

Since some DVD players wont play either . If its too old .

This (www.pioneeraus.com.au) is my writer. I'm wanting to copy a movie for now (to play on my DVD player - DSE brand, attached to my TV), but later will also be wanting to create data backups.

Rob, why is - better than + ?

411193 2005-12-08 22:24:00 Heres some help on what your after ( . videohelp . com/dvd" target="_blank">www . videohelp . com)

DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players . DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs .

DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs .

For backing up data, I suggest getting a decent brand of DVD+R

411194 2005-12-08 22:26:00 DON'T buy DSE branded 8x DVD-Rs. Despite their labelling, I cannot burn them at any speed over 2x without the data being corrupted. I can burn other brands of DVD (Princo etc) at their rated speed of 8x without any problems.

DSE 8x DVD+Rs, the disks only register on my burning software as 6x disks, and hence cannot be burnt at a higher speed.

411195 2005-12-08 22:33:00 Thx folks.

Regarding brand, I've heard that higher price = quality which makes a fair bit of difference. I'm gonna get Imation, which from past experience is a reputable brand.

411196 2005-12-08 23:47:00 I'm gonna get ImationIMHO that is one of the worst and Verbatim is the best Rob99 (151)
411197 2005-12-09 00:32:00 I agree with Rob, don't get the imation discs. I used them and had trouble and since then use the Verbatim -R's and never had another issue. Imation CD-R's are fine but their DVD's suck. Sb0h (3744)
