| 411310 | 2005-12-09 01:29:00 | The SIP on my new Dell Inspiron 9300 is showing between 78-98 in the CPU column of Task Manager . The CPU usage history shows continual spiking between 2% and 35% with Counter Spy running . When I close down Counter Spy the CPU usage settles down to 2-10%, and still appears unstable but this makes little difference to the reading in the CPU column . Does this indicate something is wrong (my computer literate son seems to think so) . Any comments will be gratefully received! |

| 411311 | 2005-12-09 02:18:00 | I have been told I'm full of . . . er . . stuff for suggesting this, but I really really read it somewhere and I believe it wholeheartedly . . . XP does some housekeeping when you are not parsing (human key clicking and typing) and appears to be sorta busy at times when you think it should be sleeping or lying dormant . I know this'll open a flame or two and for the love of me, I cannot remember where it was I read that . I have experimented a little (not much as I don't think I have to disprove my statement) by turning off everything I can find while not in SAFE MODE . . but just shutting peripherals off and pulling the plug on my DSL modem . . . and the harddrive(s) still show some small activity at times . . . and that's not just running a screensaver either . There! I've said it again . . let the hits come . |

Various windows services and other programs run, check your computers status, connect to the net, see what programs are running or a hundred of other things. It's completely normal. If the flucuation is getting too large too often a good clean-out of unwanted programs and a defrag will help. "the harddrive(s) still show some small activity at times" Don't forget that windows and all your data is on the harddrive so it gets accessed all the time by windows services. |

| 411314 | 2005-12-10 01:19:00 | Greetings. You might want to have a look at this webpage (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). Quote by Jen: The higher the system idle is, the less resources the system is using. It works in reverse with displaying the %CPU usage, the higher the figure the better things are overall. Have you done any recent antivirus, antispyware / adware etc. scan of late, dougal? Cheers :) |
