2005-12-15 09:28:00 | Gads James..I love that! Simple and insightful, yet thoughtful in a kind way. I just hate using "Page Down" on some of these posts that get 2 gadzillion responses.......kinda takes a lot of finger work that way. ...and here's the flummox: "Home" and "End" work anyplace else but here! It cannot be the keyboard, unless it has a hate for F1..but that could not be the answer. I think Metla has hacked my keys to not work here. Hello Joe, what does "Gads" mean? According to Dictionary.com: Noun: 1. A pointed tool, such as a spike or chisel, used for breaking rock or ore. 2. A goad, as for prodding cattle. Verb: To break up (ore, for example) with a gad. In your post, you mentioned that "Gads James". What does it really mean? Breaking up? :illogical Cheers :)

2005-12-15 09:32:00 | Try updating yr browser. Once upon a time i had prob with Opera and the "compose" button dissapearing when using Yahoo. I updated the browser to a newer version (or maybe just got some updates, can't recall precisely) and the compose button came back. Don't know what browser you use and obviously can't be bothered investigating but give that a shot. I am a " seat of your pants " type IT person rather than a disciplined tech like so many here but hey I keep the little honeys humming.

2005-12-15 10:06:00 | Now you've got me started, I heard today of this, don't know if it is true. In the old days fertilizer was needed for growing crops in the newly started colonies so manure was sent over in sailing ships stowed below deck, water got onto it starting fermentation and producing methane, yes you guessed it BANG. Took a while to figure it out but once they did all bags of manure were shipped stamped: Store High In Transit. Got it???? S.H.I.T. = manure

2005-12-15 18:08:00 | TY James . . . yes English as most Americans speak it . . . has a lot of . . er . . . "coloratura" to put it mildly . The word "gads" is just a shortened transliteration of the olde English "Ye gads! There's a dragon in the moat!", a phrase invoking surprise or sudden frustration . . . not what I really wanted to express to you . . . but I said that American English is transliterated anyway . We take certain license with the King's English . . but then again so do the Cockney, Irish, Scots and probably even (Ye gads! New Zealanders!) people south of the equator . . . all outta hearing range of the mother of their colonies . I am not even going to invoke the Australians right now! You would probably go nuts trying to understand a fine Texas drawl or a Louisiana tongue too . . it's even hard for most New Englanders to be understood by the "center field'ers" in the middle lands of the US . Californians have softened the language to such an extent that it is bland and utterly non-localised . . . except by it's sloppiness and lack of good literate supplication . Now, not only that there are dialects as evidenced above, but there are local colloquialisms too . "Y'all git on down heah and g'ya momma some sugar" is just South of the Mason-Dixon for: "Come over hear and give mother a kiss" . "D'jeet? No . . . d'ju?" Is just New York for "Did you eat? No . . . . did you?" "Smokin' tubular, dude; gnarly to the max" is just California Surfer for: "Wow" . See? Color is probably what keeps persons like Bill Shakespeare and Longfellow spinning in their graves . I listen to tongues and dialects for a pseudo-hobby, and one day as a woman with a decidedly heavy English (UK-type English) accent was paying her bill and speaking, I just listened to her for a few minutes . Now, don't get me wrong . . . I am not a seer or clairvoyant, but I had a neat chance to enter into a small conversation with her by stating: "Let me guess . . . I think you're from Shropshire . (That was about the only town in England I could remember at the moment anyway) . She gasped and making a cross with the index fingers on her hands, held that sign up to me and said: "How'd you know that? There are only a very few people from my town and I don't think any but myself have ever visited the States . You must be psychic or a demon!" I never told her I didn't know many towns in England . . . I just let her leave . . rather disturbed . . . alas, alak, she never returned either . (Uh oh . . I did it again!)

2005-12-15 18:15:00 | I fixed the stupid buttons-thing . I installed . . . or rather repaired XP . . that did it . Now I wonder what it was I did that mucked it up like that . . . . . .
