412404 2005-12-13 10:41:00 I would be more keen to say that XMPP is the "standard"... MSN Messenger just manages to add bloat on bloat... I dont need damn annoying fists popping outta the screen to remind me that somebody has messaged me.

Things like GoogleTalk and Gaim really appeal to me...

Shared backgrounds are cool, but really... who needs them!?! You're writing fine on this message-board without them, why on a Live chat program?

412405 2005-12-13 16:50:00 I would be more keen to say that XMPP is the "standard" . . . MSN Messenger just manages to add bloat on bloat . . . I dont need damn annoying fists popping outta the screen to remind me that somebody has messaged me .

Things like GoogleTalk and Gaim really appeal to me . . .

Shared backgrounds are cool, but really . . . who needs them!?! You're writing fine on this message-board without them, why on a Live chat program?

Totally agree Chill . But . . . . . . . . . . . .

There are times when the gadgets on MSN Messenger are useful for kids and oldsters just getting started . Remember the time you downloaded BonziBuddy? WeatherBug? ScreenSavers? (Maybe YOU didn't though) I think we all lived to regret them .

Bloated messengers are kinda cute in their own stupid way, and I admit MSN's brings out the kid in me . . . a quality that seems to be missing more and more as I grow older . But that, as an aside is not MY only reason for even having it on my machine . I faithfully use GTalk and love it's simplicity . I also admit to liking to use MSN's bloat for video conferencing to my oldest son living many miles away in Montana .

There are trade-offs for everything in life, and trying to not wax philosophically here, I say that there are more ways that are "right" for persons as they see it; the opposite is not necessarily bad or condemnable . If plain vanilla flavored text was the best, we'd all by im-ing with ASCHII on VIC>20's or C>64's .

Not wanting to swallow pride here, nor asking anyone else to do so either, I was just inputting some of the things that float my boat, so to speak .

and Metla: there is some confusion I think over this part (quoted here):

imarubberducky

"Well, it depends on what you mean by MSN . MSN is 2 things, Microsoft Services Network, or an ISP with special features like "MSN Explorer" . This doesn't apply in NZ, because it's not avaliable in NZ, so MSN Messenger is commonly referred to as simply MSN .

If you're refering to MSN Messenger, then no it is not going to be a paid service . Instead MSN Msgr will be abandoned and replaced with Windows Live Messenger, which will also be free . "

The MSN Messenger is obviously free . . . the MSN9 is what Verizon offers as a choice (between it and Yahoo/SBC) as my homepage . I have since changed that too . . . I shouldda said this:

Verizon = My ISP and telephony provider in a package deal
MSN9 = My homepage by my choice (if you think MSN is bloated . . . just look at anything Yahoo!)
MSN Messenger = one of my free messenger services

Sorry for the confusion . . . however my feelings have not changed over the lack of service youse guys get down there . :annoyed:
