413228 2005-12-16 12:59:00 Ok complete novice here when it comes to web servers .

I want to set one up . . . . No small feet for one who has no idea as to how to operate one, but I'm a quick learner . . . :badpc:

Basicaly what I want to know is . . . . what do I need to set one up . . apart from a pc . . . . .

software???? Nothing to complicated to use .

The internet conncection . . . . . who/what/where???

Static Ip or dynamic???? . . . (ok so I know a little)

how do I host other people's websites on my webserver . . . in terms I understand . . . how do I get the internet to recognise that their website is located on my webserver . . I know it's got something to do with virtual hosting . . .

and thats another thing . . who offers the best discounts for registering more than one domain????

Oh God I think I'm in over my head, but I've already got 4 people wanting me to do the job for them . . . .

so . . .

what do I do????

My own site that I have in mind is just too large to have host on someone else's server . . . . I've checked and they want to much money per month to host it .

So the server is going to have to host the site, handle email, be able to have a search feature on any website, web based chat, member login and log out on certain websites . . . . . gah it's a nightmare .

413229 2005-12-16 19:45:00 If your own site is too large, than you are probably going to struggle with your bandwidth if this is a garage server, particularly if you expect it to handle email, online chat programmes etc.
And if you know little about web hosting and servers, it may be a benefit to actually lease a cheap server which is managed, or alternatively a vps.
Learning the ins and outs of operating this will take a long time especially when starting from scratch, and if you want to sell web hosting to paying customers you will need to offer some sort of uptime guarentee.
What is your budget? and what sort of space do you require? do you expect to make money from the 4 people that want there website hosted with you?

Don’t forget not many ISPS will let you run a server from a Home ADSL connection.

But bubbybrat if you what to see how to set one up & see how they work etc…

[edit] I have re read your post bubbybrat, I would recommend that you find a proper host instant of hosting it your self :)

If you don’t mine paying $20 - $40 a month for hosting PM me as I know of a good place you could use.

As someone said above, it is usually against your ISPs Terms of Service and the upstream ADSL speeds in New Zealand are far, far, far too slow and unreliable. If you are charging someone money for hosting on a 128Kbs connection I guarantee you will end up with a lot of angry customers.

If you want to host a few big sites yourself the best option would be a dedicated server which would cost you around US$150 per month. However, as you don't seem to have experience in managing a server you might be better to recommend a host to them. Good choices are TJR Networks (www.tjrnetworks.com) and Myacen (http:).

413234 2005-12-17 09:21:00 Have a look at www.x10hosting.com. They have free webhosting - very good plans too, on the condition that you place their ads on your site. somebody (208)
413235 2005-12-17 11:05:00 I host my own site on my Jetstream connection, with email, and a dynamic ip, and i didnt know how to do it, but just by playin around with it (Windows and Exchange 2k3) i got it going perfectly...the only problem: Telecoms 128kbps upload speed....stupid monopolies dwnz (5333)

413237 2005-12-17 11:15:00 colocation could also be a good option once you learn how to run a server. Im looking at it at the mo, but its way out of my budget (no money, still at college etc...) dwnz (5333)
