413190 2005-12-16 06:03:00 What are today's standard/average specifications of a Value/Upgrade PC? It will help me if you could please give brand names as well!

What do you think of this?

This isn't a value pne, but what do you think:

Intel Pentium4 3.8GHZ 670 CPU
Abit Fatality AA8XE Motherboard
2X 400GB SATA Hard drive
Geforce 7800GTX Graphics Card
1 GB Ram
Asus DRW-1608P Dual Layer DVD Writer.

Plese help, as I'm going to build a new PC for the first time :)!

413191 2005-12-16 06:09:00 Quite good. Mirddes (10)
413192 2005-12-16 06:42:00 Quite a bit more highly specced than a value computer

Out of curiousity, how much is it?

413193 2005-12-16 06:49:00 How about you get realistic and then we can talk. If you can afford those specs then budget isn't a worry and you should go ahead and buy it. Metla (12)
413194 2005-12-16 07:04:00 No mention of a power supply there ... a pretty vital part for stability.

But why a P4 ? Looks like a gaming box, so an athlon 64 is the way to go.

I'm thinking expensive...

413195 2005-12-16 07:07:00 Those specs are way above "budget". As its listed with a 7800GTX, one would assume the system is probably for gaming, in which case I would go for a high end AMD64 or FX as the equivalents benchmark higher for virtually all games at a similar or cheaper price. 413196 2005-12-16 08:47:00 Budget Internet Box.

Asus K8V-MX 800Mhz FSB, 8xAGP+ onboard VGA, LAN, Sound
AMD Sempron 64 bit 2600+ Socket 754
512Mb Legend DDR400
Seagate 80Gb IDE
ASUS DVD 16x Play + 52x32x52 CDRW
Standard 1.44"
Integrated Graphics
Standard case with decent 400w PSU
56K Fax Modem
Standard KB
MS Optical Mouse
Creative XE222 2.1
Win XP Home

As for your listed thing. Nice maybe but you didn't list brands.
And I would go AMD rather than Intel.

413197 2005-12-16 09:35:00 Ok, but i'm really confused about one thing. This is that for example an AMD has a clock speed of say 2.2GHZ, while an Intel can go as high as 3.8GHZ, will this have any difference whatsoever in a computer? I mean I'll go for the AMD, it's way better, but does the higher cloclk speed change anything.........by the way, i'll be using for casual gaming (not hardcore), internet and music :)! zahmad (8963)
413198 2005-12-16 10:08:00 Think F1 (AMD) VS Nascar (Intel)

Ones fast no matter what the layout, uses the latest and greatest tech, and makes sure features are implemented as well as possible, the other is a lumbering old push-rod engine, well behind the feild technology wise, New features are simply bolted on with no regard to optimum performance, and they come to a screaming halt of they have to do anything more then big wide lazy corners...Which we can refer to as Branch predition......

AMD perform more operations per clock cycle. So in simple terms AMD's do more work per MHZ/GHZ. As the AMD64/FX's run at lower clock cycles but performing more operations, they also run cooler than Intel P4. It is a better architecture from AMD at the moment. An OLD example I use to describe this is

*What is faster, a 386DX40 or a 486DX40, they both run at 40MHZ. The Answer is 486DX40 as the architecture is superior to 386.

Exactly the same type of argument with AMD vs Intel, you cannot compare using MHZ alone, apples and oranges.

Here is a quick benchmark AMD VS Intel, there is hundreds of further examples to back up what we are saying, if you want to google further.

Note the AMD64 3800+(2.4gig) is kicking the ass of the P4 3.8 gig, this is a normal scenario in gaming. As for Internet and Music, there will be no difference.
