414065 2005-12-20 02:31:00 Ok im on windows XP home edition, my isp is sympatico highspeed.

Last week i called my ISP after getting advice from you guys (which sadly didnt help the situation), it turned out that, according to sympatico tech support my entire bandwidth was being taken up because of a lack of filters, and possibly because a filter on my cordless phone had worn out.

Well, after i disconnected my cordless phone the problem seemed to dissolve. Suprise suprise, less than a week later it starts again (yesterday) AFTER my parents have bought new filters. The cordless phone is still unplugged. Thing is, the filters were plugged in a few days before yesterday so i do not think they are to blame... im clueless and im really sick of calling worthless tech support at symptatico, where I have to tell them what is wrong.

Last time we fixed some things with hijackthis, any help is really welcome.

My problem is that my internet disconnects me every 30 seconds or so during the night, but miraculously works fine during the daytime, no other problems that that.

414067 2005-12-20 02:41:00 Filters don't wear out. They can be blown up by line surges. Usually, any surge severe enough to cause this would be noticed. ;)

Bandwidth isn't "used up" by filters (worn out or not present).

Faulty (or absent) filters might cause a reduction in the usable ADSL bandwidth. A cordless phone might cause interference in the ADSL signal while the phone is being used. Neither of these should cause disconnection.

Is the "every 30 seconds or so" an accurate description or hyperbole?

Boy these guys sound thick.

Filters are not used by ADSL and you don't need a filter on them. The filter has to go on the phone. Maybe you have it on the phone and ADSL in which case it wont work properly at all as it will filter out the frequencies that ADSL use.

The way I have it is to have an adaptor at the plug at the wall. The ADSL gets plugged directly into this plug and the filter for the phone gets plugged into the other. Phones are then plugged into the filter.

If you have too many phones and filters you may need to get the line split properly and have the filter external.
