413766 2005-12-19 04:32:00 then tries to patch things with SP-2.

Sorry! Too late!

How on earth does that patch things?
Having a decent antivirus program would be more to the point.

413767 2005-12-19 13:33:00 I have installed all updates since june 1999. Not a hint of a problem. Perhaps due to, "It's a Clean Machine" To quote the Beatles. Vince (406)

That is interesting. This is also a "Clean Machine" I had to get my HDD replaced under warranty with a re-install of XP and SP2. Although the first thing the technician said when I related my initial problem was "have you recently installed any MS updates"?. So there appears to be different thoughts on whether the updates do or don't cause problems.

As a PC Tech, you should know that people in desperation will try lots of cures for what ails their puter. That includes finally (after a lot of wasted time), going out and finally getting that d____d SP-2 thing that M$ tries to send.

I have even seen a neighbor who is so dumb that he gets a puter filled to the max with spyware/trojans/viruses then he then goes out and buys a new puter because "they sold me a lemon and I need another one...this one is all botched up." His attitude is that HE cannot be doing anything wrong..it HAS to be a poorly-designed system. He also refuses to update anything from M$..they are to him the bad guys. His puters last about 20 seconds on the internet.

I get a lot of free puters and equiptment that way. I like him a lot.

But...yup..I agree that a good anti-anything is necessary..but running naked on the internet is just suicidal in the long run.

413771 2005-12-21 06:04:00 I am inclined to follow your advice or perhaps just install critical updates as Tazz suggests. What is the 3rd party security you refer to?

413772 2005-12-21 06:16:00 Seriously though.. most techs will usually update a new machine with the latest patches for security etc. If they can't touch the machine, they will recommend you put all updates on yourself.

AS for suicide, for the new to average user, you are right, it needs to be updated, it needs antispyware (Spybot and Ad-aware) Antivirus (Avg) etc etc

Personally I run my laptop with XP SP1 :) its hardly ever updated etc, but then if I get into trouble; I have the ability to get out of it for free :) .. most however don't.

Windows + MS updates - any 3rd party security = naked.

Patching Windows is like trying to make a bucket by putting sellotape on a sieve.
