| 414122 | 2005-12-20 07:10:00 | I have two older computers I'm setting up for friends, for Christmas, but I'm having trouble with their startups . In both cases, I want to have the machines boot straight into Windows without a login prompt . The first computer is a Win98SE machine - I previously had this networked to my WinXP machine, and had set up a profile for it to connect to my WINXP machine . There's no password, I just press enter to bypass it . But the login is still there, and because I no longer need to network it, how do I get rid of this? From memory - haven't got the computer close to hand to check this out - it's not setup via the Users and Passwords control panel (though I could be wrong . ) Is this the only way to remove a login, or is there another way? The second computer is an ex-work machine running Win2k . It has what I presume typical Win2k security (i . e . pressing escape doesn't work) . When I booted it up, the profile was "user" and pressing enter would get you into Windows, but because I also wanted this machine to boot straight into windows without the login, I went into the Control Panel and deleted the "User" profile, and rebooted . Now, the "user" profile is still there, but it wants and password, and ENTER is no longer enough . Now I can't get into Windows to do anything about it . Any ideas (other than a re-install)??? Cheers Lizard |

| 414128 | 2005-12-20 22:11:00 | There's a bootable floppy Linux utility I've used that'll reset just about any Windows administrator password to blank . I've used it before but I've lost it name . By the way, if you go this route any encrypted files will be lost, but this is unusual on a home PC . Here's a couple of possibilities . thomasmathiesen . com/itak/html/software . html" target="_blank">www . thomasmathiesen . com . eunet . no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/" target="_blank">home . eunet . no . petenetlive . com/Tech/Windows/WinGen/passwordrecovery . htm" target="_blank">www . petenetlive . com |
