2005-12-22 00:14:00 | Hi, While writing a posting I hit a key (I don't know which one) and after that the screen changed back to the forum list . Sorry . I have no sound coming out from my speakers . I've been looking for an explanation of what directsound test failure results Failure at step 19 is but no clear explanation of the steps to do to fix it . :help: I have WAV associated to windows media player . That is no good because when I try to use a WAV file, the mirosoft media player jumps in and I don't know how to avoid it . I need a sound not the whole microsoft's shebang . If you have (and I guess you'll have) questions please let me know and I'll try to provide the information . Thank you for any help ;) Dead_in_the_water

2005-12-22 00:50:00 | It looks like "step 19" is "User verification of software" meaning it's probably an old driver and not digitally signed. Is this a new install, or did you change something, such as installing XP SP2? Now for the second part, to change the WAV association to something else. Right click the Start button, and choose explore Tools...Folder options "File Type" tab Scroll down to WAV (press "W" to get there quicker) "Change" Pick your program.

Going by parts: 1) The SP2 was applied months ago and all worked . I had the sound working fine . 2) Recently I installed Tiny Desktop firewall used it for 30 trail and uninstalled it today . I think this is not a fator . 3) This is a problem . My WAV currently points to a "WAV file" and I have two options,(winamp or media player) 4) Under both Winamp And Media Player I have no sound at all . 5) I have something called Crystal WINMM WDM audio compatibility . 6) No matter what, in both cases (winamp or media player) were selected no sound was heard . In Winamp I could see the equalizer's lines going up and down . No sound . When pointing to Media Player, the same thing . It bring up the blue media center and no sound . Both cases the Master Volume are at their max You said it could be an old version fo the driver . Looking back at this picture, I just can't imagine what kind of software would do something to a sound driver . 7) I ran Spybot + ad-aware, the worst I came up with was a "traking cookie", 8) I'm using Spywareblster and up-to-date . 9) two days ago I applied a corretion (microsoft) . Not a factor . 10) checked in Properties of MYPC each one of the sound stuff . All of them were considered enabled and ready . This is what I can say for now . I hope these lines will shed some light to the issue . Thanks Dead_in_the_water . |

2005-12-22 02:35:00 | I would check device manager under sound . See if the soundcard has got a !, or X beside it . Or reinstall the soundcard drivers for whatever brand/model the mobo is . And maybe reinstall DirectX 9 . 0c .

2005-12-22 03:19:00 | Speedy Gonzales gave good advice . Have you tried a "MID" file, a MIDI file? You'll usually find one of your do a search via Windows Explorer . It uses slightly different resources than a WAV . You said you removed some firewall software . I'm guessing you're using the XP SP2 firewall, and not a hardware based firewall . You may want to double-check via the Control-Panel, as a Windows PC can be infected in under a minute without some form of firewall .
