414363 2005-12-20 22:18:00 My Pent2 PC with XP home can't install Win because of corrupt file. Tried to install with CD in repair mode, by choosing R. After that it went into command prompt and asked for administrator password. Since I am only user, I did not put in any password when installing Win XP and don't know what to type on prompt. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

414365 2005-12-21 02:56:00 If you got a corrupt file, it may indicate a more serious problem.

Run a full checkdisk on your local hard drive, by right-clicking on the drive and choosing tools.

Also make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date, and you've recently scanned all files.

Lastly use something like AdAware to check for spyware

Thats not the Repair . Its the Recovery Console . Choose enter to install at that stage - then the second stage is where you choose R for repair .

Best bet is to "Clean install" XP saves a lot of mucking around
