414508 2005-12-21 08:11:00 Evening folks,
I'll try to keep this short.
A friend has a laptop that was playing up.
Bought it to me for a cleanup etc.
AVG hadnt been updated for quite a while, so I did.
Found a few viruses straight away.
Healed or deleted them.
Now the computer wont connect to the net,

Modem dials up, little blue screens flash on and off, makes the right noise.
Click on IE6 or AVG update and the pages open up and say page not available.
The two blue tv's dont flash like they are trying to access the net.

Unistalled modem, rebooted, auto reinstal, no good.
Ran full AVG scan, didnt find anymore yuckies.
Reloaded drivers etc from Compaq recovery DVD, not fixed.
Ran the modem troubleshooter and it says "The troubleshooter detected that a COM port may be disabled."
It then goes on to say open Device Manager and go to Ports (COM & LPT) But I cant see that in Device Manager anywhere.

Any suggests?

414509 2005-12-21 08:50:00 Assuming the modem is internal, it probably used COM3, which is a virtual com port that does not show up in Device Manager.

If you can hear the modem "dial" and the noise, the com port must be working.

414511 2005-12-22 00:06:00 Have a look in the BIOS. Even if it's only got one "real" connector, it will have a second port. That might be assigned to an IR device. Which will stop it from working with an internal modem. Graham L (2)
