415227 2005-12-23 08:48:00 Has anyone else tried WinZip 10 from the Dec/Jan PC World DVD?

I tried it and quickly re-installed WinZip 9.
First of all, the registration that has worked OK for years on various versions does not work for Version 10. So all you get is an evaluation version (unless you pay more $$$).
But even worse, they've completely changed how it works.
I guess it does lots more things and is more flexible, but in the process, they've made it much too complicated.

IMHO, that is

415228 2005-12-23 08:51:00 To be honest, WinZip has become merely improvements in compatibility rather than compression. Compared the the likes of WinRAR or 7zip, WinZip falls short.

My two cents.

415229 2005-12-23 09:25:00 I hadn't heard of 7zip, so I just downloaded it and tried it on a directory containing 95Mb of data including 3 30 Mb binary files.
7zip: 15 Mb compressed file in 1 min 48 s
WinZip 9: 37 Mb compressed file in < 20 s.

So, I guess if you want better compression, you pay for it in increased time to do it.

BTW, I'm using an AMD 64 w/ 2Mb RAM.

415230 2005-12-23 09:39:00 compression is often adjustable. eg in winrar you can set fast but big or slow but small. tweak'e (69)
415231 2005-12-23 12:19:00 I prefer using Powerdesk. Haven't liked WinZip for years. mikebartnz (21)
415232 2005-12-23 12:47:00 CoffeeCup Free zip Wizzard is a good alternative. It allows you to select the degree of compression you want and it has built-in FTP functions for uploading files as well. It is 100% freeware.
You can get it here,_

415234 2005-12-24 22:06:00 Have used Winzip since 95, getting free updates since then, so don't object to paying US$15 for v10. Pretty well any decent programme that was freeware now has to be paid for. Sign of the times. Re v10 after some adjustment to the new layout have no problems. FrankS (257)
415235 2005-12-24 22:35:00 i use winrar Prescott (11)
415236 2005-12-24 22:48:00 Same here, to be honest WinRAR provides all the features I would ever need PLUS great compatibility and compression. Haze (3028)
