415038 2005-12-24 04:59:00 no go,nothing happensDo you mean nothing happens as in the computer doesn't load the CD when you boot the machine? Or you tried a recovery and it didn't fix the issue? You need to be more specific so we can give you appropriate advice. :)

If your computer does not boot from the installation CD, then you need to go into the BIOS setup and change the boot order. To get into the BIOS you normally push the DEL key when you see a message about pushing DEL to enter setup. This message is normally only displayed for a few seconds at the bottom of the screen as the computer first starts up and displays details about your computer (POST).

You can find further information on why Installation CD's fail to boot here (www.computerhope.com)

415040 2005-12-24 10:30:00 If the CD drive is not set as the primary boot device it will be necessary to access and modify the BIOS settings.

Question on the above and also the exact settings,where they are found in BIO's exact.

I've found BIO's page,but theres heaps of techo stuff in there,so maybe i'm looking in the wrong place,If I'm not what names do the these go by:

1 - Floppy / LS120
2 - CD-ROM
3 - Network (if available)
4 - Hard Disk Drive

anyways found this in BIO's in/under BOOT section

Silent boot [enabled]
intel(R)rapid Bios boot [enabled]
pxe boot to lan [disabled]
usb boot [enabled]

415041 2005-12-24 10:57:00 Yes you are
you should select the CD rom as the primary boot device at this stage
if A = Floppy
C = Hard drive
D = CD Rom

then you want a boot order something like D,C,A currently

415043 2005-12-24 20:16:00 whatever, you do need to set it so that the cdrom is the FIRST boot device..as tho how to do that .......well there are many differing types of bios screens and each has it's own methods......you WILL see on the screen some instructions as to hwo to change stuff .... this might be on the bottom of the screen or the right hand side.. drcspy (146)

415045 2005-12-25 09:55:00 Well a fresh install is one way of getting rid of lurgies ...

Before you even consider connecting to the internet again, a freshly installed XP is at great risk of being infected. Does your OS come with SP2 already included? You can check this under Control Panel > System > General Tab. Please ensure XP's built in firewall is activated at a minimum.

Do not go onto the internet without the firewall activated.

Install a good Antivirus program next and update the definitions, followed by visiting the MS Windows Update website and download any critical or security patches. Installing a decent third-party firewall will also be beneficial.

You can configure your email client by following the instructions here (www.xtra.co.nz). Those settings are for Xtra. If you wish to configure the machine for a different ISP then visit the homepage and check under Help or Support for the correct settings.

Your question about how to connect the machine to the RTA300 router has been answered in your thread about that topic - see here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)
