415478 2005-12-24 04:09:00 When I startup my Flaptop I am given the choice of two Linux Kernels to run.
They are Kernels

2.6.10
and
2.4.something_a_rather

Is there any difference when booting from one or the other?
Does having a slower system affect the kernels?

Should I leave it permanently as one option?

415479 2005-12-24 04:39:00 Use the 2.6 kernel.

The 2.4 Kernel is older, there is no reason to use it.

415480 2005-12-24 05:06:00 The newer kernels (2.6+) have much greater hardware support by default and offer various improvements.

What are the specifications of the computer you are running Mepis on? Is the hardware pretty standard? Does everything currently work OK?

Yes, albiet a bit slow.

Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300
Celeron 650
128mb Ram. Yes It needs more.
10GB Hdd
Integrated sound and video

Also... another quirky problem.

When I log on as root or my other name, the speaker volume is always set to mute and volume set to zero. I have to manually turn them all up. It seems to have happened after I updated the ALSA components.

How to I make it sticky again.

415482 2005-12-24 21:02:00 Did you also update/install the alsa-utils package? This package provides ALSA tools such as amixer, alsamixer and alsactl etc.

The sound volumes should be stored on shutdown by default, but try running from command line as root alsamixer, adjust the levels and escape out. Then run alsactl which should store the levels. See if this helps.

I doubt running a 2.4 kernel will speed up your machine much. As you already know, the minimal RAM is a contributing factor. Doubling it will make a huge difference. :)

415483 2005-12-24 21:40:00 Hmm I cant find them. Both commands are non existant.
Though if I search 'alsamixer' via Synaptic I get alsamixergui.

So obviously I updated the Alsa components and did something wrong. :xmouth:

415484 2005-12-25 08:45:00 Well I guess if you installed alsamixergui it will require alsa-utils as a dependency. Otherwise, just search for alsa-utils. Jen (38)
