415173 2005-12-23 05:51:00 A friend is thinking of upgrading a Asus notebook harddrive from a 4200rpm to a 7200rpm. Are the notebook harddrives brand specific or will most 2.5" ide notebook hard drives be able to be fitted?

Thanks for any help.

M.

415175 2005-12-23 06:10:00 Great thanks,

How hard is the process of installing the hdd?

I have installed a few hdd's/ram/pci cards into my desktop my have never opened a laptop. I'm thinking I should probably take it to a shop to do.

Also is it posible to just ghost the current hdd to the new 7200rpm hdd (in an external usb enclosure) then simply swap them without reinstaling everything?

Thanks again.

415176 2005-12-23 06:30:00 For ghost not sure, it can be done but before u load it onto back u have to use sysprep or something its on the MS site. Or esle u get blue sceen and not boot.

not sure about latest version of ghost, but can ghost access usb HDD?? when u dump the gho file.

install hard drive, undo one or two screen pull caddy out. attach plastic clip cover onto new hdd and slide in. boot up.

415177 2005-12-23 07:04:00 if u cannot ghost to a external HD, then u can partition ur old HD and then dump the ghost file from c: to the new partition - provided there is enof space.

then copy this file onto CD. swap the HDs around.
unload ghost file onto the new HD. remember to use sysprep before u unload it..

Above, supposed to be undo one or two screws, not screens!

Will definately be the safest option - laptops can be tricky things to upgrade
