415551 2005-12-24 17:19:00 Hi all and Merry Xmas

Was given an old computer to play with (Compaq), thought nice little computer for mum and dad.

It was running XP on 64MB ram, has 12GB hDD and 533Mhz processor.

I added 256 ram and put in a network card to connect to my adsl router.

Ran Stinger and spybot (recent download with no update), found probably about 10 nasties in total.

I am having trouble connecting it to the net and as I was playing around with the LAN setting I noticed that the 'sent' & 'received' values increase at a phenomenal rate. I dont fully understand what the 'packet' refer to but assume that it is traffic moving from comp.
Comparing these values to my computer - mine was connected for about 8 hours and was something like 8, 000 pkts sent, this compaq was connected for 18 min and had something like 12,000 pkts!!

I am probably going to have to do a full instal but wonder what would cause such heavy usage. Could this be the work of a troajan/virus or some setting I need to adjust.

Cheers
Sam

It could be the work of a nasty, or it could be MS downloading updates in the background. Put a third party firewall on the machine and see what is requesting internet access.

Running Highjack This on the machine might be beneficial as well. :)

415553 2005-12-24 18:03:00 was running XP on 64MB ram,...........ouchy lol........as for the data rates...if its 'sent' data it's quite possibly some kinda nasty........get ewido security suite it's a free trial and VERY effective........stinger is great but quite limited......... drcspy (146)
