2005-12-27 07:51:00 | Hi I was wondering if anybody knows of any free wifi hotspots around Christchurch. Also, if I were to set up a network at home, what equipment would I need and what would I need to sign up with? If anyone knows a rough estimate of the cost, that would be helpful. Thanks Mike

2005-12-27 09:58:00 | NZ basically has none for a place where u cannot get unlimited broadband its unlikely . Accordingly to this NZ has: New Zealand The Malthouse Greenhithe Restaurant and Bar - 10 Greenhithe Road - +64 9 4138651 - Greenhithe - Auckland Bayswater Marina - Sir Peter Blake Parade, North Island, Auckland Green PC Company Hotspot - 761 Great South Road, Auckland Hoyts Cinemas Ltd . - Westfield Mall Riccarton - Riccarton - Christchurch Fountain Lodge Motel - in rooms only - Whangarei . wififreespot . com/aus . html" target="_blank">www . wififreespot . com Even for a place like HKG, not much too: Hong Kong Systech Telecom offers free Wi-Fi - requires registration - within several shopping malls . (1) Tsim Sha Tsui Centre, Hong Kong (2) Empire Centre, Hong Kong (3) China Hong Kong City (Ferry Terminal), Hong Kong (4) Olympian City 1, Hong Kong (5) Olympian City 2, Hong Kong (6) Island Resort Mall, Hong Kong (7) Tuen Mum Town Plaza, Hong Kong . Discovery Bay area Discovery Bay Resident Club - lobby, reading room, patio, pool side, Tai Pak Bar, Cafe Greenery and function rooms Discovery Bay Office Centre - business centre Club Siena - reading room Discovery Bay Piers - waiting area Discovery Bay Piazza - all outdoor sitting area Floors 1 to 4 of the World Trade Centre (shopping and restaurant area) in Causeway Bay International Finance Center in Central Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan Zambra Coffee - 239 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai Festival Walk shopping center - 80 Tat Chee Avenue Kosmo Coffee - corner of D'Aguilar and Wellington in Lan Kwai Fong The Kowloon Hotel Hong Kong - all guest rooms, retaurants and bar - 19 - 21, Nathan Road Tsimshatsui - Kowloon Island Shangri-La - lobby and function rooms - Pacific Place, Supreme Court Road - Central - (852) 2877 3838 Kowloon Shangri-La - lobby - 64 Mody Road, Tsimshatsui East - Kowloon - (852) 2721 2111 China Ferry Terminal The world's most would prob be North America or main Europe . I have a friend who emails from USA the public lib or from a cafe when he has a coffee . He does not have a computer but is thinking of getting a laptop so he can take it there . . . Alternatively you can use this: . wifinder . com/index . php" target="_blank">www . wifinder . com NZ free results ( . wifinder . com/searchresults . php?loc=&add=&city=&st=Any&zip=&country=New+Zealand&tfree=yes&protocol=1&x=15&y=13" target="_blank">www . wifinder . com) For info sake, free in Hong Kong ( . wifinder . com/searchresults . php?loc=&add=&city=&st=Any&zip=&country=Hong+Kong&tfree=yes&protocol=1&x=17&y=7" target="_blank">www . wifinder . com) what a drag thou, only 2 in HkG accordinly to that free searcher . HKG is v competitive but the going goes, maybe there is nothing as free lunch . In the USA there are plenty ( . wifinder . com/searchresults . php?loc=&add=&city=&st=Any&zip=&country=United+States&tfree=yes&protocol=1&x=24&y=5" target="_blank">www . wifinder . com) USA prob has it for their free marketing thingy they have . Buy something and you get free internet, kinda thing . For shareing internet at home, you need two wifi cards thats it . If a laptop has it then you don't need it for that . Don't need a router but gives flexibility, the most is when one is off the other computer can still use the modem and access it . More than 2 PCs you will need a router thou . Not sure but can someone answer me? Is it possible to get a external ADSL router modem and it is also a wifi card/unit as well? 2 wifi cards at a guess some can be had for around $35-65 (each) . Router is more . www . pricespy . co . nz for an indication .

2005-12-27 22:10:00 | install netstumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com) on your laptop. make sure you have your wireless card installed. get someone to drive you around town and this will pick up hotspots. Netstumbler will tell you if it is locked and what encryiption, or it will say its unlocked. if its locked forget about(but there are ways to get past it but i wont go into detail here). then go down to the system tray and double click on your wireless connection, find the connection in the list and connect. now leech away. and its free. i have picked up several free hotspots around invercargill and the other town i am close to. very quick broadband too. here (www.nodedb.com) are some hotspots to check out, dont forget that there will be a heap more than thats actually on this list, so you might aswell look wardriving and look for yourself :p

2005-12-28 11:49:00 | Well, I don't have a laptop to do that.. But I did try and find some by getting the PSP to scan for hotspots and see if they have any security etc, probably not as easy and quick though. Would the cantenna work to extend the range of the PSPs wifi connection? :P

2005-12-28 21:55:00 | install netstumbler on your laptop . . . . now leech away . and its free . . . . so you might as well look wardriving and look for yourself Dude, this is seriously illegal . At least for piracy, you could rationalize that you're probably only affecting a faceless corporation like Microsoft; wardriving usually affects a small business or individual . It's possible if a small business or individual has an "open plan", meaning it won't be throttled back when they hit a limit, you could be costing them hundreds of dollars per month . I know you'll say: "anyone stupid enough not to protect their wireless connection deserves what they get . " However this like saying anyone stupid enough to leave their wallet on their desk deserves to have it stolen .
