416530 2005-12-30 00:35:00 I've just got myself an Athlon64 upgrade box from PB Technologies.
I've split the HDD in half and installed XP Pro on one partition and plan on installing Gentoo on the other. I think I have to do a new install as the Gentoo install on the old 'puter is x86?
This will be the third time I've been through it, so look out for some hair tearing etc.
Does anyone have any idea how linux goes with (on board) a Via/S3G video device? or, Realtek AC'97 Audio for Via, audio controller?
I'll probably upgrade to NVidia soon for video, but I don't feel like forking out any more money just at the moment.
Another thing, I notice the AMD64 universal CD download is 392mb, as opposed to the x86 one of 684mb. Is there a reason for this that someone might know?

Whoops, actually the x86's are 398mb, my mistake, don't answer.

416532 2005-12-30 01:41:00 I know from my laptop that Gentoo has AC97 drivers within the kernel, from memory I am also 90% certain that S3 graphics drivers are in there as well.
Just compile them into the kernel

416533 2005-12-30 02:13:00 Do this:

man -k via s3; and

man -k realtek to see if the drivers exist. Look at man drivername for more info. Google to see if the hardware can use another driver if it does not have one of its own.

Note: man -k is equivalent to apropos. The S3 drivers are part of X and not the kernel, and work flawlessly as far as I have experienced.

I was going to start this afternoon; but my son's partner sliced her thumb so dad has to go back into the cowshed :groan:
Well, maybe this evening
