2005-12-27 20:08:00 | Greetings. I am finding that I am being dumped by my modem, sometimes after 10 minutes, other times after hours. I have tried disconnecting the phones in the house but that makes no difference. The modem, a D-LINK, seems to get very warm. I dont know if it always did. The only way of reconnecting is to restart the computer. Restatring the browser (mozilla) and the modem doesnt do it. Is there any means anyone knows of by which I can isolate this problem before I go nuts. I am running win2k. Cheers

2005-12-27 20:16:00 | Get hijackthis (www.merijn.org) from here (www.spywareinfo.com) Unzip it first into its own folder, and then scan and copy and paste the log here. Or here (www.hijackthis.de) if you know what to look for.

2005-12-27 20:49:00 | Our dynalink rockwell based chipset 56k modem does this too (disconnecting) and we done all those checks even dropping the connection speed, does not help . while my laptop's 3Com modem does fine . i think its the modem . but having said that i had a buggy 3Com modem last time when you moved the laptop the modem hardware will just fail to respond or load in windows with yellow exclamation mark and then after some mins or hours it goes fine or if you jack open laptop and reinsert the modem or sometimes even wait a few days . i have bought a used one off ebay and been fine . the one i got from the manufacturer was buggy but they couldn't detect it as it was intermiddent . we use a download manager and if it disconnect we just use the resume function thats as good as it gets for us or until we get BB or the unlikely event get a better 56k modem .

2005-12-27 21:41:00 | Yup, these used to have dynalink 56k's . They went fine for so long, and then up to last year keep disconnecting / having probs . So, they got biffed, and I replaced them with Intel based modems . Haven't had any probs since I replaced the dynalinks . Yer, I use Opera for resuming transfers . It's not too bad, for this .

2005-12-27 21:49:00 | What Nomad said is true. 3com's are more expensive, but generally give less headaches. | kingdragonfly (309) | |
2005-12-27 21:52:00 | Have you also checked your line? is there any clicks or ticks in it? | Prescott (11) | |
2005-12-27 22:01:00 | My 302 gets quite hot too, and the desk just under the modem got hot too. so I've put two small wooden blocks under the modem to form an airspace and increase the airflow and it's definitely helped. Anythings worth a try
