Shops are likely to be closed. Us repair people are never closed.
Look in your local paper and ring a tech.

It shuts down within seconds of being switched on, simply with "windows is shutting down".
The computer is running on Windows XP with an ADSL connection.
I will look at it this evening and attempt some of the suggested ideas.

Not sure at this stage what security system is being used.

416122 2005-12-28 07:39:00 sounds like a cpu fan issue, gets too hot and then gets a emergency protection shutdown to prevent killing ur cpu.

or could be a power issue. take cards and other drives out apart from vid card and main hdd and see if works.

It takes much more than "seconds" to actually load Windows to the stage to get the message that "Windows is shutting down", usually about 30 - 40 seconds for most systems to load Windows I would estimate. Unless its going into Standby mode and not truly powering off.

That indicates a controlled shutdown, not a hardware failure.

A hardware failure would be an abrupt power down with probably no warning, much like turning the power off at the wall.

From power-up, tap F8 twice per second to see if you reach "safe mode" selection menu. That could eliminate hardware and put the focus on software.
