I have two sticks of 512 mb ddr 400 ram in dim 1 and dim 2. They work perfectly and give no trouble.
If I shift dim 2 into dim 3 it does not work. Only 512 ram recognised.
Either stick works fine in dim 1.
According to manual, system should work with ram in 1 & 2 or 1 & 3 .
Asus web site mentions dim 1 is a different colour. Mine is not. All slots are grey.
Is there any simple way to check if dim 3 is faulty? I do not have a third stick to try out, so don't suggest that.
Everest and others all recognise dim 3 and record it as empty. With ram in 1 & 3 it is still recognised as empty!!!
I want to buy a third stick of ram but I want to know if it will work before I buy it.
Memtest finds no problem with ram in 1 & 2 after an overnight test so it can be assumed current ram is OK
Basicly I just want to know if there is something wrong with dim 3.

416258 2005-12-28 17:54:00 try this , take out all ram and place one stick in slot 3, if the pc boots reconises the full amount of ram its not faulty ( slot not the ram) if not well I look at warrenty beama (111)

Does not work. Ram must be in slot 1 .
Forget warranty. M/B is over a year old.

416260 2005-12-28 19:18:00 Is your DDR single or double sided
Are they an exact matching pair? i.e same brand name and specs

Hello Jack. You didn't mention anything about DIMM 4. Does it exist on your motherboard? From what I know, RAMs are normally paired based on DIMM 1 and 3 or DIMM 2 and 4. Perhaps Asus has its own way of doing.

Cheers :)

All ASUS motherboards have a 3 year warranty. If your shop denies this go directly to Morningstar and tell them what ****s the shop people are.

416263 2005-12-28 20:11:00 Also which board is it that you have?
There is no K8NE-E. There is K8N-E. Or K8N4-E.

You need to look at the motherboard manual - the memory configuration diagram.
It shows single sided and double sided combinations.
For DDR400, 333, etc.
Its very specific about which slots to use depending on what exact ram you are using.

Thats exactly why I asked what his DDR specs were as it appears to be a very fussy board in terms of memory configuration
The manual is very specific as you say, about the configurations it will accept

Check here pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

Note the overclocking by 10%

Things may have changed since that post but I think the motherboard may be the same.

The above is only correct if a retail version of the motherboard has been used.

If the PC has been built by a company that gets their motherboards in OEM form then only the warranty that they choose to give (or the CGA will let them get away with applies)

The same applies to all components that you care to mention, normally part of the deal with large users of oem equipment is they get the product at a much reduced cost in exchange for bearing the costs associated with warranties for the individual components.
