416136 2005-12-28 02:37:00 I am having a play around with an old computer and buying some ram via trademe - but just curious, what is the difference between pc100 & pc133 (hope they are interchangeable)

oh and also, the difference between double sided and single sided? - are they also interchangeable

416137 2005-12-28 03:01:00 PC100 has a maximum bus speed of 100 MHz, PC133 has a maximum speed of 133

If the laptop needs 133, then it will not run on 100.
If it needs 100, then 133 usually works.

Single sided refers to the issue of the RAM chips being on one (single) or both (double) sided.

The motherboard must be capable of taking the right module, if it only works with single sided type then it will not recognise all the RAM on a double sided module.

416138 2005-12-28 04:31:00 Thanks GF, I was worried that the difference was a physical thing but it looks like I'm on the right track.

cheers

416139 2005-12-31 22:56:00 Hi GF I have asked about upgrading ram, but had no satisfactory answer.

The P11 IBM received for fd present, originally had 584mb ram, but had been reduced to 320mb.

It has 256mb 133mhz 168pin and 64mb 100mhz 168pin.

Had tried inserting another 256mb 100mhz 168pin stick into the spare slot, each/every way and received the 1-3-4 beep failure. (Memory Types Mixed - unbuffered & registered).

Have searched the net and found that the 64 chip is in fact a laptop chip.

GF any further help would be much appreciated.

Lurking.

416140 2005-12-31 23:41:00 Have you tried removing the 64mb stick and replacing it with the " spare " 256mb stick ? KatiMike (242)
416141 2006-01-01 00:45:00 Thanks KatiMike, have thrown out the piece of paper with the, ways I had tried inserting the sticks, this was back on the 12th Dec. Had to tidy the place up for Xmas and visitors.

Will try the sequences again and come back.

Still wonder about the 64 stick though.
