416024 2005-12-27 19:01:00 It depends on your uses for it, but I think that the AMD Athlon 64 is better, especially the X2s :D The_End_Of_Reality (334)

416029 2005-12-27 20:54:00 AMD is good for most things.

Dual core is good for image software or video with big files, processing. V noticeable.

For Intel its comes down to business work really if you need more disk access like backup, access the network freq., rip video or mp3 I think and the like. A niche area thou.

If you wanna compare the two at least do a Pentium D vs AMD Athlon Dual Core (X2?).

416030 2005-12-27 21:46:00 I'm quite a computer snob, and I usually by the most expensive equipment available even when the benefits are dubious.

However, I think Intel really lost the track when they introduced the Pentium 4, and all subsequent processors. (The jury's out on the multi-core CPU's.)

I saw an interesting article on comparing a Pentium M, which is basically a Pentium 3, against a Pentium 4

http://www.tomshardware.com

Basically when the two CPUS ran at the same speed, and on the similar motherboards, there was very little difference in performance. However the Pentium 4 sucked much more juice, and needed much more cooling.

I also read that Intel top-end multi-core motherboards had problems with high-end motherboards, though I'm sure this will be straightened out.

For now, I'd stick to AMD, plus a nice NVidia video card.

416031 2005-12-27 21:55:00 a Pentium M laptop cpu in a desktop.
ive been reading a bit about this lately and its interesting, they get some very high overclocks with cool temps aswell. but of course its not a cheap option :p and recommended for "extreme overclockers" :D

that probably doesnt interest you though....
